Michael Avon Oeming
Recently, I did an interview with Michael Avon Oeming (Powers, Ares, and Thor: Blood Oath).
Outhouse: Which do you prefer more; writing or drawing and which takes longer for you to do? In general, who do you think makes more money; artists or writers?
Michael Avon Oeming: I like both, but writing is easier, or just less time consuming. I still love drawing and I’ll never stop. Money? It depends; artists make more per page, but writers can do several books a month.
Outhouse: Since you’ve written stories dealing with both Greek and Norse mythology, which is more interesting? Also, is there any other ancient mythologies that you want to focus a work on?
Oeming: I don’t have a preference really. I think I’m closer to the Norse myths though. I want to tackle American Indian mythology next, but it won’t be awhile for that.
Outhouse: Who’s the next creator for your column, OEMED!, at Buzzscope?
Oeming: I think Alex Maleev. Matt Wagner’s will hit next week-ish.
Outhouse: Since Sean Connery ruined your chances of doing a Zardoz series (go here for more information ), anything of his you would like to ruin?
Oeming: Yeah, League of Extraordinary Gents. Fuck that movie.
Outhouse: Since Ares is rumored to join a superhero team, what would the team look like if you made one for him instead?
Oeming: It would be a team of villains he keeps in check, real bad asses like Sandman and Absorbing Man.
Outhouse: As a fan of ancient mythology, who is your favorite mythical character and why?
Oeming: I can’t say I have one, Thor is right up there for sure though.
Outhouse: What work do you have lined up next?
Oeming: Something major, but it’s not announced. The next thing is really the Cross Bronx, my next creator-owned book from Image this September.
Outhouse: Anything you feel doesn’t get enough fans and needs to be pimped?
Oeming: Yeah, Starbuck’s, no one seems to go there.
Outhouse: If Marvel told you that they wanted a book drawn by you featuring Paste Pot Pete, the Big Wheel, or Captain Ultra, who would you pick?
Oeming: I would pick Big Wheel, my kids likes cars.
Outhouse: Is there any writers or illustrators that you haven’t worked with that you want to work with on a series?
Oeming: Sure, there are tons of guys! Mostly guys too big to want to work with me though.
Outhouse: Do you take the time to actually think about drawing the breasts in Powers?
Oeming: YES!! I think “when can I next draw breasts?” Answer- Issue 19!!
Outhouse: Are there any titles out there that you don’t think are getting enough attention?
Oeming: I don’t know about numbers, but I know Marc Andreyko’s Manhunter is really good, people should check be checking that out.
Outhouse: What’s your current favorite joke?
Oeming: I don’t have any. I don’t like jokes. I’m a very serious man.
Outhouse: And lastly, who would win in an arm-wrestling match, Brian Michael Bendis or Joe Quesada?
Oeming: I think Joe. He’s from Jersey.
