Putting this Top Ten together hurt. A lot! I've listed previously writers I've whittled away and the last one, my number eleven... John Ostrander. So close!

01) John Byrne
02) The EC writing corps of Johnny Craig/Al Feldstein/Bill Gaines/Harvey Kurtzman
03) JM DeMatteis
04) Gardner Fox
05) Jack Kirby/Stan Lee
06) Keith Giffen/JM DeMatteis
07) Geoff Johns
08) Frank Miller
09) Alan Moore
10) John Wagner/Alan Grant

Byrne #1? really?

I thought if anyone was going to question that it'd be you.

Ounce for ounce, pound for pound - JB wrote some damn enjoyable comics. His 'try-out' issue in Marvel Two-in-One 'try-out' issue is a genuine classic. His Fantastic Four was near flawless. Namor is still the best Sub-Mariner series of them all. His Superman, Adventures of Superman & Action made Superman meaningful again. I loved his Wonder Woman. Iron Man, New Gods, She-Hulk, The Thing, Next Men and of course (just to make you cringe)... West Coast Avengers!

And while not included in my list he was equally great when co-writing (with Stern on Captain America and with Claremont on X-Men/MTU/Starlord).

Sure, just like every other writer, he's had some duds, but just because he's many people's favorite target to bash, doesn't erase in my mind the excellent volume of work he has done.

hey, don't get me wrong, I enjoy JB for the most part as well. his Supes stuff was great, his FF was great, his Namor was great, his co-writing stuff as you mentioned is great. but beyond that, IMMO there's a whole lot of average (Alpha Flight, WW, Thing, Shulkie, Iron Man) to bad (WCA :smt011 :smt011 ) stuff in there. I can definitely see him getting consideration, I can even see him possibly making top 10...but greatest writer ever? that's a stretch farther than Reed could make.

Just missing the cut were Warren Ellis and Walt Simonson.

It's not a bad list. I think this is the first time I've seen Ostrander's name show up.
