Marvel NOW! Captain America

The "Soldier" teaser last week is revealed to be Rick Remender and John Romita, Jr on Captain America.

Source: INTERVIEW: Rick Remender on CAPTAIN AMERICA from Marvel NOW!

Though he sort of spilled the beans earlier in the week, Rick Remender confirms that he and artist John Romita Jr. will be working on the Marvel NOW! relaunch of Captain America.

Remender says that he doesn't want to tell the same stories as Brubaker and will stay away from telling tales of World War II for now. His first arc, comprised of two stories is planned to run for the first ten issues and is called "Dimension Z". Part of this arc will be a look at Steve Rogers' youth and what shaped him growing up. The other part will be featuring Arnim Zola, and do with him something similar to what he did with Apocalypse in Uncanny X-Force. Another character we'll see is a new one named The Green Skull. The Green Skull believes that humanity is the cause for all the problems on the planet and wants to turn the human race into soil for plants.

Captain America #1 will be available in November.

The solicitation follows:

CAPTAIN AMERICA #1
Written by RICK REMENDER
Pencils & Cover by JOHN ROMITA JR

The Saga of Dimension Z begins here!

The all-new, high-adventure, mind-melting, tough-as-nails, sci-fi, pulp-fantasy era of Captain America is GO! You’ll need a neck brace for this boss ride, true believer!

Who is the Green Skull and why does he want to transform all of humanity into plants?

What is the secret behind the unmanned rocket train running miles beneath New York? How will Captain America’s life be forever changed with one ride?

Plus, the first chapter of the never before told origin of Steve Rogers! Enter: Depression Era New York, and the mean streets that made one 98 lb weakling earn the heart of a hero.

32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

IMO JRJR is one of the all-time greatest comic artists. I know it's all subjective & down to personal taste but how anyone who loves comics can't see that he's a master of the medium (along with George Perez who I see gets some stick on the forums) is beyond me.....

There's no denying his body of work, as a whole, is pretty amazing. However, the things he's been pumping out for Marvel proper (AvX, Avengers) has been absolutely awful. He's evidently taken more effort in the Hit-Girl/Kick-Ass books and it really shows.
Do you know what the most frightening thing in the world is?

That cover is fine. Dean White is one of the best colorists in the biz, and it makes Romita's work even better.

I do agree that Romita is not as good as he used to be, but that's a fine cover.

that cover is great, I just don't understand why he's holding the shield that way.

I will admit his AvX has looked a bit ropey but I thought his run on Avengers (Heroic Age) was great. Going back a bit his Daredevil, Iron Man & Spiderman runs - fantastic. As for his Thor, one of the best artistic turns in comics & no-one draws The Destroyer like JRJR. (All the above IMHO obviously).

I think he is at his best where one character is the main focus rather than a large cast as in a team or event book. Really looking forward to the new Captain America series.....

Another awkward looking pose from JRJR.

Just try to imagine a reason why Cap (or anyone) would stand like that, one foot up on a (conveniently-placed) pile of rubble and holding his shield thusly.

And whether that's a face-mask or a shadow gone rogue, it looks wrong or unfinished.

Look, there's no denying JRJr's career, or his talent. But personally, I also don't think there's any denying his old style was much better looking than his current blockier style (seriously, compare his original runs on Spidey, Iron Man and X-Men with hs later runs on each book...it's not even close), and IMMO, Cap is the one Marvel hero he draws worse than any other (except Spider-Woman...ugh, horrendous). I just don't think this is a great fit for him.

That's actually a great idea--play to JRJR's strengths and write an 'edgy' gender-bending transvestite Spider-Woman. :D
