Saga #6 - spoilers

Postby habitual » Wed Aug 15, 2012 2:42 pm

I realize it's only the sixth issue, but, goddamn this comic never disappoints.

Fiona Staples might be my favorite new artist, and I think Vaughn utilizes her talents brilliantly. This was my favorite page from the most recent issue the Will just found out about the death of the Stalk. Sometimes a good writer just knows when not to add anything:

Also I'd like to add when I die I want to be buried in the Rocket Ship forest.

Between this and The Unwritten I really can't say which is my favorite title, which DOES bode well for Vertigo and Image.

I liked this issue more the second time I read it. Fiona Staples gets better and better (she did some great THUNDER Agents covers too recently).

I kind of hope Izabel isn't dead-dead.

It's cool how much BKV enjoys an old-fashioned letters column dialogue with readers. And I love that his dog's name is Hamburger K Vaughn.

Similarly, Kirkman & Sina Grace do a great job with Walking Dead's letters columns. It's funny you used to almost take them for granted, compared to how much they add to the single issue comic today.

This issue cements this as the best book currently being published.

It's definitely up there as strongest debut, and solid with 6 issues almost ready for the first trade. Sad to see there will be a hiatus but at least it's fairly brief. Hopefully people will buy the shit out of trade 1 and pick up the monthly from then on to strengthen the book.

The Will is awesome.

The Stalk was fucking creepy, so I'm glad she's gone.

Tough to compare to BKV's other books, because it's only six issues.. but through the first arc of this, Y, and Ex.. I think this might be my favorite opening for the sheer amount of world building done in these six issues alone.

I think overall, Y: The Last Man is still my favorite thing of his.. but if he continues with this at this high quality, this should easily top it.

And honestly, I'm surprised we had six issues without any major delays. I remember Ex Machina was constantly delayed near the end there.

He writes great female characters, there are still a lot of otherwise good writers (like Hickman) who seem unaccustomed or even afraid to write female leads or main characters. It's one of BKV's real strengths, though.

I disagree. Both Val and Daisy were very well written.

Actually, I didn't find much of Secret Warriors to be that well-written to be honest. I think he learned a lot writing that book though. I think he introduced some interesting new characters, but, uh...so much for them.

Man, the letters page makes me really miss the old BKV.tv forums :( Great comic though

I'm sure he won't use them again ever at all, in either of his Avengers books that will be shipping three times a month.

The Unwritten has totally been knocking it out of the park for me lately, otherwise I'd agree with this hands down.

I still can't decide.
