I have the same Eisma sketch. Well, not the same, but I also ordered Morning Glories on DCBS.

My good friend Kevin has gotten tons of cool commissions done by both big and small names.
Here're some examples from his ComicArtFans page

And, breaking with my usual GI Joe theme, I picked up this Captain America by Will Conrad at the Charity Art Auction.

Those are some great commissions. This would be the only reason I would ever go to a comic book convention. How much of a bitch is it to get commissions at a convention? Do you already have your artist planned out ahead of time and get there insanely early? Do you set them up before the show?

Thanks for providing a direct link to your gallery. Your images only show up for me half of the time.

I've done both. If it's someone I know will be crazy (like Jill Thompson) I emailed directly and worked out the price and what I wanted. I actually prepaid via Paypal for that.

Others I've done via email without prepaying if they didn't do Paypal.

A couple I just did the day of and got there early.

A lot depends on the artist themself. Barry Kitson for instance never has a list. Just a line. Francis Manapul is another like that. I didn't get a regular sketch from him just a 10 second Flash headsketch in my Brightest Day hardcover.

Thank you! That's the main reason I go too. Meeting creators and talking to them about their work is a lot of fun. It's actually pretty easy to get commissions done. I do a mix of both, but either way, I do research ahead of time. I'll take the artist alley list, plug their names into comicartfans.com, see what I like, and narrow the list down to a few names. I'll contact the artists I want the most ahead of time (this time it was Hardman and Rooth) to make sure I get on their lists (they can fill up quickly). They had the pieces ready for me by the time I got there on Saturday. Then I had Norton and Govar do theirs in my sketchbook over the weekend. I got the guys I wanted the most, so I was pretty happy. The only thing I missed was Phil Jimenez, who does really nice, detailed head sketches for free. His line was too long and didn't have a chance to get to me. But with what I got, I can't complain.
