DC Comics to Release Monthly Books Directly to Amazon, Apple, Barnes and Noble

The books will be available as direct downloads on the Apple iBookstore, Kindle Store, and Nook Store.

Source: DC Press Release

DC today announced a major step forward in the push to drive brick and mortar comic shops out of business by making all of their monthly titles available for direct download on the stores of three of the biggest mobile content providers, Apple, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble (Google's Play Store, formerly known as the Android Market, was noticeably absent from the list). While all three stores put some form of DRM on their books, preventing them from being read on devices or apps outside of the purview of their corporate masters, the ability to download actual digital files is a big step toward giving digital comics purchasers tangible ownership of a product they've paid for. In most other current digital comics models, such as comiXology or the comiXology powered DC and Marvel apps, files are stored online in "the cloud," leaving some readers feeling more like renters than owners.

According to DC, every single one of their monthly offerings will be made available through this program on the same day they are released in stores. This kind of availability has long been considered dangerous by industry analysts, who project that the digital market could make current readers less inclined to purchase physical books from local comic shops, rather than bringing new readers into the fold and benefiting the entire industry. Fortunately, DC is keeping prices of the digital books unreasonable compared to the amount of content contained within, which should help to mitigate the damage.

We should also consider the idea that this new availability will put comiXology out of business, which would prevent comiXology from putting local comic shops out of business, in which case it might be a brilliant strategy.

One more interesting thing about DC's press release, posted below, is the fact that, for their teaser line, they chose to mention Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Batgirl as examples of the books they publish. Not Aquaman. Not The Flash. Not Green Lantern, who was the subject of a major motion picture. Batgirl. Make of that what you will.

The books are available now, although some readers outside of the United States are reporting a limited catalog (which they hilariously spell catalogue, because they are silly foreigners who use the metric system - haha).

Here's the press release:

DC Entertainment Digital Comic Books Now Available on Kindle Store, iBookStore and Nook Store

DC Comics’ Entire Line-up, Including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Batgirl and Many Others, Now Available for Direct Download from All Major e-Bookstores

DC Entertainment, the #1 comic book publisher in the U.S., announced today its entire line of periodical comic books are now available for download from the top three e-bookstores including Kindle Store, iBookstore and NOOK Store™. The precedent setting new digital availability brings bestselling DC Comics and Vertigo periodical titles, including JUSTICE LEAGUE, BATMAN, SUPERMAN, DETECTIVE COMICS, ACTION COMICS, BATGIRL, WONDER WOMAN, GREEN LANTERN, FABLES and AMERICAN VAMPIRE, among many others, to an even broader audience of digital readers.

“As e-readers and tablets continue to explode in popularity it’s important for us to offer consumers convenience and choice in how they download digital comics and graphic novels and these new distribution deals with the top three e-bookstores do just that,” said Jim Lee, co-publisher, DC Entertainment. “We’re very excited to work with Amazon, Apple and Barnes & Noble to bring bestselling DC Comics and Vertigo periodicals to their e-bookstores.”

DC Entertainment is now the only comic book publisher to offer its periodical line-up across all major e-bookstore platforms. The deals reinforce a long track record of digital comics industry leadership and innovation from DC Entertainment that dates back to its game-changing decision to make its entire line available same-day digital with the launch of DC COMICS – THE NEW 52 in Sept. 2011. That launch is widely seen as reinvigorating the comic book industry, and has led to increased sales of both digital and print comics.

Lee continued, “We were the first to offer our entire comic book line same-day digital and now we are the first to offer fans the convenience of multiple download options.”

In addition to now being available for direct download through the top three e-bookstores, DC Entertainment will continue to deliver periodical comics online at www.readdcentertainment.com, through the DC Comics and Vertigo apps, and all comiXology platforms.

Prior to this announcement only DC Entertainment graphic novels were available through the top three e-bookstores.

The Bat-titles are gaining interest and buzz lately. "Batgirl" sales have been increasing this year, so why not mention "Batgirl" ? It ties to the Bat-Family as well as the female demographic.

Better books deserve it than that book.

This doesn't bode well for Vertigo.

"Not Green Lantern, who had his own movie".

Um, yes they did. Green Lantern is mentioned right there in the press release, in the exact same sentence as all the others, right after Batgirl and Wonder Woman...

Teaser line is the subheadline.

DC Comics’ Entire Line-up, Including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Batgirl and Many Others, Now Available for Direct Download from All Major e-Bookstores

You're looking down in the text of the article. The teaser is their next chance, after the headline itself, to get the info they believe is most relevant to readers out there and entice the reader to read more. Once in the press release itself, you have a lot more room to include a bunch of stuff. DC believed that Batgirl was more likely to get people to read their press release than Green Lantern.
