DC Shocker: Hellblazer Ends at #300, Replaced by New 52 Constantine Series

The long running series ends in February.

Source: Associated Press

DC Comics is cancelling Hellblazer, the long running Vertigo series as of issue #300.  The comic will be replaced by a mainstream series entitled Constantine, which will begin in February. The new series will be written by Robert Vendetti with art by Renato Guedes.  That series will focus on the younger Constantine seen in Justice League Dark.  For those keeping count, Constantine officially ensures that the "New 52" will remain 52 titles in February, joining Justice League of America, Katana, and Vibe.

The cancellation, as pointed out by Outhouse writer GHERU, marks the end of DC-owned properties being published by its Vertigo imprint.  The Hellblazer finale will be written by Peter Milligan, whose been writing the series for several years.

We all knew it was only a matter of time before DC finally cut off the Vertigo series at the knees.  The fact that it survived nearly a year and a half into DC's new integrated line-up speaks volumes about the strength of Hellblazer and its fans.

Here are the sales figures:

09/2009: Hellblazer #259 -- 10,813
09/2010: Hellblazer #271 -- 9,851
----------------------------------
09/2011: Hellblazer #283 -- 9,597 (+2.4%)

07/2012: Hellblazer #293 -- 9,247 (-3.0%)
08/2012: Hellblazer #294 -- 9,396 (+1.6%)
09/2012: Hellblazer #295 -- 9,143 (-2.7%)
----------------
6 months: - 2.4%
1 year : - 4.7%
2 years : - 4.6%
5 years : -29.3%

Very stable figures over the last two years. There’s still a drain going on, but it’s relatively slow.

It sells under 10,000 copies. If DC thinks it would do better as a Nu52 title, they have every reason to cancel the Vertigo book.

If there's a 30% drop over a 5 year period then they broke it, they should fix it in a manner that restores it to it's previous level. There is nothing logical or justified in this move.

Vertigo should be about more than sales levels.

Because that worked so well with "restoring" the Legion's original timeline, right?

Nacireman, fine with Hellblazer having the heart of the character ripped out of it, but writes a 300 word rant about Superman's pants.

Vertigo is a capitalist enterprise. Time-Warner can only allow it to continue for so long if it's unprofitable.

Well, on the positive, Milligan is off the book, and, presumably, no more bimbo wife, so I'll be eagerly checking out Vendetta's take on Constantine.

Superman's pants are aesthetics. This is about economics. Look at the sales:

Sales have been below 10K for years. If DC thinks it would do better as a Nu52 book, it has every right to do so.
