Marvel The Next Big Thing: Avengers Arena Liveblog

Hopeless look at Marvel's teen characters.

Source: Next Big Thing: Mystery Liveblog

Marvel is holding "Next Big Thing" events all week. Today's liveblog focued on the upcoming controversial "Avengers Arena" title. Avengers Arena writer Dennis Hopeless fleshed out some of the details of this upcoming series during the event.

The basic story is that 15 Marvel teen heroes (plus Darkhawk, who is not a teen) find themselves trapped on an island by Marvel villain Arcade. The only way off this version of Murderworld is to kill everybody else. Hopeless said he initially came up with using Arcade, but dismissed it until Axel Alonso asked him to use the character. This time he is more scary and "respectable" (as a threat). Series artist Kev Walker illustrated the threat and drew up a map of the new Murderworld (island). There are four sections, arctic, water, forest, and desert. More about Arcade will be told after the first arc in the series.

Hopeless says that this is not a limited series because space is needed to explain why the kids would do what they do, and to develop their fear and distrust of one another. Eventually there should be a "game change" and it will stray from the core concept, but it's a long story. As to why they adult heroes are not looking for the kids, they are and it is part of the story, but that aspect will be minimal (at least early on).

As to comparisons with Battle Royale and Hunger Games, Hopeless says that the difference is that these are superheroes raised in the Marvel Universe. You'll see  the stiuation from several different characters' points-of-view. Aside from the characters we know (eg. Darkhawk, X-23, Hazmat), we'll also see new characters such as the posh Braddock Academy kids and the 14 year-old female Deathlok, Deathlokette.  The homage covers will go through at least issue 5. It's also more than about who would win in a fight, there are also character personalites that will be explored.

Avengers Arena #1 by Dennis Hopeless and Kev Walker arrives in December 2012.

I'll probably peek because I love Arcade. More importantly, I want to see what could possibly convince these heroic souls not to work together to escape. Captain Kirk would never accept this.

They used to have to use magic or mind control to make heroes fight their fellow heroes, now that seems to be the prevailing conflict in supes comics and all they ever do. You'll all buy it too, don't lie..

That, too. Apparently this is addressed, just don't know how yet.
