James Tynion IV talks "Talon"

James Tynion IV talks

Tynion describes his take on Calvin Rose and teases what to expect in future issues.

Source: Press Release – DC Blog

From a Press Release at the DC Blog, James Tynion IV talks about his new series Talon

Launched in September as part of DC Comics’  “Zero Month,” Talon tells the story of Calvin Rose, the Talon who managed to escape his doomed fate. Co-written by Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV and featuring art by Guillem March, this ongoing series spins directly out of this past spring’s “Night of the Owls” crossover event that spanned the Bat-family of titles.

With  Talon #2 (in stores this Wednesday) we have Calvin and Sebastian who have been aware of the court for years and know many of the Court's secrets, and that gives them an advantage right from the top. These are two are the only people who are capable of really going after the Court in a level similar to Batman, in that they can come at them from angles that the Court would never expect. They're coming at it from the inside. It also revealed key pieces of the Court's own internal mythology, the stuff that's much more a part of their own tradition, the things even Batman would never know about.
And we were left with one heck of a cliff-hanger ending featuring a major threat, someone who is the complete opposite to Calvin. He's been part of this story since Tynion first came up with it. He is a terrifying, terrifying character that Tynion is having fun writing.

Tynion describes the Court as:
They're the boogieman to Calvin. These are the people that ruined his life, and he's been running from them, terrified, for years. And this is the moment where, when he finds out that people he cares about are in danger, who he thought were safe, he's finally willing to stand up and fight.

On his approach to this series:
I wanted to make this a book that I would want to read. That was the main goal. It's something that Scott taught me all the way back, years ago, when I was one of his students. He told me, it's not worth writing something if it's not the thing you want to read most. And that's where I came at this.

Talon picks up from what was preiously established by Scott Snyder over in the Bat-titles. As co-writers they have stayed faithful to that but gradually we will start seeing more of Tynion’s spin on things:

"There's some really special stuff to come that I think is going to start being more definitively me than definitively Scott, although it's still very much in Scott's wheelhouse, because we're still playing in Scott Snyder's Gotham right now."

Upcoming issues will have Calvin traveling around the DCU. For now the plans are to stay a bit more focused on Calvin's personal history. Instead of running into other heroes he's going to run into people from his own past. However, expect a certain superhero to be very curious about a Talon running around Gotham City, in the wake of the "Night of the Owls."

TALON #3: on sale January 2, 2013. Part one of a two-part story begins with a trip to New York City. See where Calvin first went when he escaped The Court Of Owls. The return of Casey and Sarah Washington, the two people from #0 who he refused to kill; this is where they start coming back in a really big way. We're going to see what happens next with the people who Calvin cares about.

TALON #4: Part two. Find out what Calvin was up to when he first escaped from the Court, what his first real actions were -- and what he and Casey tried to build in the City before he left. The appearance of new antagonists for Calvin that were hinted at at the end of issue #2. These events will have a huge impact on the direction of the series to come.

Talon #5: Guillem March returns as regular artist.

Below check out the cover and some interior art for issue #2, and the covers for issues #3 and #4.

Be sure to also check out more interviews with Tynion that ran this week in MTV GEEK, COMIC BOOK RESOURCES,NEWSARAMA, and COMIC VINE

Article doesn't mention that Guillem March was taken out back and shot, and replaced by Juan Jose Ryp for issue 2.

If he was shot, how can he return for #5?

He obviously couldn't meet the deadline, nothing sinister there.

It's a minor nitpick, but I don't like the hair sticking out of the half-mask... but this series has been a great read so far!

Guillem March had other projects he was working on at the same time when this title started. Apparently it was known from the beginning that in order to finish up those existing projects he would need some free time so that's why they used a guest-Artist to assist.

At least Marvel annouce these things in advance. DC sure are doing a lot to protect a book because it's Scott Snyder's pet character

Calvin Rose looks a lot like Gambit here.

Poor Gambit. I like the character but they keep fucking up things whenever he gets a monthly book.

His Nicieza one went for 25 issues. You think Talon will go that long after Snyder bails after arc 1?

Lets be realistic, when a currently hot creator leaves an obscure spinoff book 9 times out of 10 it'll flop and fail.
