Andy Diggle Discusses Plans For "Action Comics"

Andy Diggle Discusses Plans For

The new Writer takes over in March with a bright and optimistic Superman

Source: Newsarama

Back in October this Outhouse article by ThanosCopter  revealed that Andy Diggle and Tony Daniel would be taking over Action Comics starting with issue #18.

In a recent interview, Diggle now adds more details.  First up, he plans to bring this title up-to-date with the rest of the DCU and the other Super-titles and promises a “bright and optimistic” Superman.

After years of writing dark, tough-guy anti-heroes, it’s a breath of fresh air being able to write a hero who is 100 percent pure and good and doesn’t have a cynical bone in his body. He’s a paragon.

However working in a shared universe Diggle is aware that he needs to keep Superman consistent with how he is portrayed in other DC titles. “He’s shown himself to be a little more impetuous, a little more punchy than the Superman of yesteryear. A little rougher around the edges.”

Diggle also wants to bring a science-fiction vibe to the Man of Steel:

I think that just makes sense on a modern Superman story – he is from another planet, after all. The DC relaunch has given us the opportunity to create more coherent back-stories for some of the super-powered characters. I think modern readers are too sophisticated to buy the whole “bitten by a radioactive lawnmower” origin stories that writers got away with in decades past. I think readers who enjoyed my Adam Strange: Planet Heist will enjoy this.

Along the way Diggle is looking forward to including characters such as Wonder Woman and the new relationship between her and Superman, and Lex Luthor who will be featured in the opening arc.

Diggle see Superman is the ultimate superhero – the original. And there’s a big spotlight on him right now, what with the 75th anniversary and the new movie coming up this year.  The writer promises to respect the history of the character and the previous roster of talents who have brought Superman’s stories to life. Diggle plans to build on that pedigree and tell stories with both brains and brawn: “Heart and swagger, as my writer friend Daragh Carville puts it.” Diggle added.

I liked his Adam Strange, so, yeah, I like the sound of this.

As long as Diggle brings his Adam Strange/Losers talent with him, I'm all in.

And just like that, with two further sentences I am OUT.

"Impetuous" is something I expect out of an inexperienced SuperBOY or worse, Chuck Austen's poorly-rendered Golden Age Super-throwback, not a SuperMAN with 5 years experience. Somebody tell this nUperguy to GROW UP.

And the LAST thing anybody should want to be is "Punchy"! :P :-D

How bad WAS Chuck Austen's Superman? I avoided it because, well, it's Chuck Austen, and never heard anything about it besides the fact that he was swiftly ushered off of the title.

Don't try to pretend that you were ever going to give the book an actual chance to begin with.

Everyone who read it had their tongues ripped out.

OTOH his Metropolis series was great, but also swept under the rug when it was done.

I'm utterly shocked you of all people are passing on this.

The only bad thing i can recall from Diggle is shadowland which was only because editorial mandated making it into an event. With creative freedom he can do amazing things with this book.
