Zach Snyder Developing Seven Samurai-Esque Star Wars Film

The movie will be independent from the upcoming sequel trilogy.

Source: Vulture

Vulture is reporting that 300 director Zach Snyder is working on a new Star Wars film for Disney.  The twist is that this movie will not be a direct sequel to the original Star Wars films, but rather a stand alone movie based on the Akira Kurosawa classic Seven Samurai. For those who haven't watched the original, it's the tale of seven samurai hired by a town to stop a group of bandits who regularly pillage their harvest.

Lucas was long an admirer of the 1954 film, and has often cited as one of his favorite movies of all time.  Allegedly, the Snyder project will be set vaguely after Episode VI and will be a standalone film.  According to the report, the project will go into production around the same time as Episode VII, which Snyder is not directing (as is every other director of note).

While this is obviously still a Star Wars rumor, one of thousands at this point, I'm sort of hoping it'll be true.  If it is a real project, I tnominate internet heartthrob Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play the lead.  Even he couldn't kill a Star Wars film.

Ugh. Like Seven Samurai, but it's been used enough.

In fact, though it was only really one character, this reminded me a little of that...

There was this sci-fi futuristic anime that I watched on Netflix a while back based on Seven Samurai. I imagine this will be similar. I hope it never gets made.

The original Star Wars was influenced by Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress, so it's really not surprising that somebody else would think that they could use another Kurosawa classic in an attempt to recreate some of that original magic.

Wait wait wait.

So Seven Samurai came first.

Then The Magnificent Seven came out, and did the same thing, but in Mexico.

Then The Three Amigos came out, and did the same thing as that, but with actors.

Then Galaxy Quest came out, and did the same thing as that, but in space.

Now this will come out, and do the same thing, but played completely straight.

The hell?

No, Bugs Life fits in under Three Amigos. Its two layers removed from Seven Samurai.

It was just a rumor, and it was denied. It isn't happening.

Updated (2:45 p.m.): Snyder’s spokesperson denies the Vulture report, telling Heat Vision, “While he is super flattered because he is a huge fan, Zack is not involved in any way with the new Star Wars. He is currently in post on his two films, Man of Steel and 300: Battle of Artemisia.” The representative clarified that means no Episode VII, VII or IX, and no spinoffs.

It was supposed to come out at some point but it's pretty much stuck in development hell for the time being.

Either that or he's chained himself to a post and is on hunger strike and protest until someone greenlights it.

So he's using nonviolent passive resistance to try and bring about extreme violence and gore?
