GLAAD has released the nominees for the 2012 GLAAD awards. What was nominated in the comic book category?
Source: GLAAD Today, GLAAD announced the nominees in their annual Media Awards, which recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate, and inclusive representation of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives. The awards feature an Outstanding Comic Book category, despite the fact that the comic book industry views gay rights as a cheap marketing gimmick to snag free publicity and increase sales on their comics, similar to the way they view polybagged hologram variant covers. In any case, Peter David and X-Factor won the award last year, for "pissing off alleged homophobe Rob Liefeld when he made Shatterstar gay," and this year there are a new round of nominees:
Astonishing X-Men by Marjorie Liu
Marvel
Batwoman by W. Haden Blackman, J.H. Williams III
DC Comics
Buffy the Vampire Slayer by Andrew Chambliss, Scott Allie, Jane Espenson, Drew Z. Greenberg
Dark Horse
Earth 2 by James Robinson
DC Comics
Kevin Keller by Dan Parent
Archie Comics
We say give it to Buffy or Batwoman, as they're the least shamelessly opportunistic examples of exploitation of the bunch. What do you think?
The Outhouse reached out to prominent gay comic book character Iceman for comment on being snubbed from the awards. "I'm not gay," said Iceman, defensively. "Not that there's anything wrong with being gay. I'm just saying, for me personally, I'm into girls. I like to touch their boobies and like, their vaginas and stuff. I'm totally dating Kitty Pryde, and it's not because Jewish girls have a lot of body hair and so from behind she looks like Wolverine. I'm totally into, like, having breeder sex with her, as a girl, and stuff."
