![]() Alright, we have to admit, this is pretty cool. Marvel will offer digital downloads for free with all Marvel NOW! Premiere Hardcovers! Source: Press Release There's a lot more that comics publishers should be doing to embrace the digital age, but even a hardcore digital enthusiast like this reporter has to admit that Marvel's latest announcement is pretty damn cool. Marvel is going to start including digital download codes with all Marvel NOW! premiere hardcovers. While they say they're doing this at "no extra charge," the cost of these sorts of things is always included in the price of the item, as with digital movie downloads that come with blu rays. If the price hasn't gone up from previous hardcovers, that just means that they were charging you too much before. Regardless, it's a good move that continues the company's expansion into the digital marketplace and will allow trade-waiters to try out reading comics digitally. Now, if we could just get reasonable prices and DRM free downloads, responding to piracy concerns instead of living in fear of them while punishing paying customers, we'd really be moving along. How about that next, Marvel (and other publishers) (and the movie and television industry)? Here's the press release: Marvel NOW! Premiere Hardcover Collections To Include Codes For Bonus Digital Editions New York. NY—January 22nd, 2013—Marvel Entertainment is pleased to announce that the first volume hardcover collections included in the Marvel NOW! initiative will now include codes for bonus digital editions of these same collections, all at no additional cost. Customers can redeem the codes on Marvel.com, and then the free digital collection will appear in the My Comics section on both the Marvel Comics app (for iPhone®, iPad®, iPad Touch® & Android devices) and online in the Marvel Digital Comics Shop, so fans can read their favorite Marvel NOW! stories anytime, anywhere! This unprecedented initiative begins with All-New X-Men Vol.1: Yesterday’s X-Men Premiere HC, on-sale in March. Marvel NOW! takes the Marvel Universe in an exciting all-new direction, as the industry’s top creators join the top Super Heroes—The Avengers, X-Men, Spider-Man and more-- to deliver all-new ongoing series, great for current, new and lapsed readers alike! “Marvel’s committed to not only bringing fans the best comics with Marvel NOW! but to also bringing the best value, which is why we’re the first publisher to include free digital copies with the first volumes of our top hardcover collections on this scale,” said David Gabriel, SVP of Sales, Publishing & Digital Media, Marvel Entertainment. “We’ve seen an overwhelmingly positive response from retailers and fans to the digital codes included—at no cost—in many of our monthly comics and select graphic novels. The universal support and praise for this initiatives makes it clear that including these codes with our books drives customers into comic stores on a repeated basis.” The following Marvel Premiere Hardcovers in 2013 carry the Marvel NOW! branding and will includes codes for free digital copies of the collections via the Marvel Comics app: ALL-NEW X-MEN VOL. 1: YESTERDAY’S X-MEN PREMIERE HC Each Marvel NOW! premiere hardcover collection features special augmented reality content available exclusive through the Marvel AR app – including cover recaps, behind the scenes features and more that add value to your reading experience at no additional cost. Actually, DC just lowers it by a $1. They're weird like that. Anyway, Marvel usually lowers their prices months later in order to draw attention to certain titles (working theory). |

The only problem with paperbacks is that it'd be easier for people to nab the codes without paying for the trade. |

Yeah true ![]() |

Why would it be easier? |

Hardcovers usually come shrink wrapped while paperbacks are generally left wide open. |

You would think they would shrink wrap all of them. |

Not necessarily the best idea for paperbacks. It gives a random passerby the chance to flip through it. If they like it, then they can buy it. Or shamelessly read it all in the store. |
