Passing this week because...

- I've only read the first trade of Invincible.

Invincible #100

I have never read this book. Not a single issue. I don't even have a particular reason why.

Yet it was my pick and I chose this over Dollar Bill #1.

So I jumped into a hundredth issue knowing nothing and...

It's okay. Kirkman id just enough to catch me up to date (hero teams up with dinosaur to make the world a better place and they mess up and a lot of people died). So now that I'm 'caught up' I'm looking for the story - and there really isn't one. It's basically an all talking issue (even the dinosaur's death is off panel).

This isn't a bad thing however. The dialogue is pretty good and even though I don't know anyone, they all have a unique voice (although it did seem like the dinosaur's turnabout was pretty darn quick). The art is crisp and clean and just on the good side of not being too cartoony.

The only confusing thing I found was why the dad in the row boat panicked so much when his boat bumped into a sunken car.

What I've gleamed from this issue is that there looks to be a lot I've missed and from all the dialogue and I think I'm intrigued enough to want to see how this all came to be. The downside of this issue is that it's done nothing to make me want to see what happens next (not even the 'surprise' at the end which means nothing to the new reader (i.e. me)).

Beginning at the exact moment where the previous issue left off, Invincible #100 wastes no time in addressing the fate of the title's main character. Having reached the end of "The Death of Everyone", it becomes pretty clear that the arc wasn't really about the death of any one major character but rather, the death of over 800,000 regular citizens of Earth. While this issue may lack action, a lot does happen in a really short time. True, this issue is one of Kirkman's more dialogue heavy issues of the series but it firmly establishes a new but slightly familiar status quo for the main character's. The surprise at the end of the issue may not be a huge shock, it is something that has been attempted before in this book but if it actually sticks around this time, it will dramatically shift the focus of the main characters. I'm excited by the prospect of this chance and it honestly feels like the natural next step in these character's lives.

Invincible has been one of my favorite superhero comics since I first started reading it with the first hardcover. Anyone who likes quality superhero comics should be picking this up. For the $3.99 cover price on this issue you get 30 pages of story, 10 more pages than Marvel offers for the same price.

With this milestone issue I was honestly expecting something more substantial, something more earth shattering. I guess I have just been spoiled on past events that have happened in this comic book. What you do get is pretty much a return to status quo and a surprise ending that we have already seen before in this comic. This issue is dialogue heavy but the dialogue is fantastic as always. Ryan Ottley's art continues to impress with every issue. He has come a long way since he first started working on Invincible. Another solid issue of Invincible is down with hopefully another 100+ to come.

That's fine, I didn't get this comic book in until this week because it came out the fifth Wednesday of January and DCBS ships my comics to me after the fourth Wednesday of each month.
