Superior Spider-Man Not Legitimate Rapist Says Newsarama (SPOILERS)

Rape is okay as long as it only happens once or twice and one of those times is on a misleading comic book cover, according to the op-ed.

Totally unbiased and impartial website Newsarama today posted an editorial addressing what the site deems an overreaction by comic book fans and media to recent events in Marvel's Amazing Spider-Man and Superior Spider-Man books. In the final story in Dan Slott's Amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker switches minds with Doctor Octopus and then dies in Doc Ock's body, leaving the villain to carry on as Spider-Man in Peter Parker's body. In Amazing Spider-Man #700, Doctor Spiderpuss steals a kiss from Peter Parker's ex-wife, Mary Jane Watson, while posing as Peter. Many fans decried the act as rape, and were further upset by the cover to Superior Spider-Man #2, which features Spiderpuss stealing yet another kiss from Mary Jane, who this time seems repulsed and is trying to break free as the doctor forces himself upon her.

As it turns out, inside the pages of the comic, Spiderpuss has a change of heart after experiencing some of Peter Parker's memories and decides to break things off with Mary Jane and not rape her anymore. According to Newsarama, this proves that Marvel was innocent the entire time, since no penetration ever took place (unless you count tongues), and Doctor Spiderpuss only kissed Mary Jane once, not twice. As to the cover of Superior Spider-Man #2, well, that was just a red herring designed to stir up controversy. Using an image of rape to sell comics is clearly not the same thing as having rape occur inside the comic, so you should all be ashamed of yourselves for getting mad about it.

To accentuate the point, Newsarama's front page is adorned with a huge background ad for Superior Spider-Man #2, as well as a smaller skyscraper ad, both of which feature the not-really-rapey image from the cover. We're sure that these ads were given to Marvel pro bono in support of the comic, and shouldn't be taken as an indication that Marvel's financial support of Newsarama through advertising has any effect on the journalistic integrity of its editorials, just like it has no impact on the 8 out of 10 rating given to the book in today's Best Shots review. It's simply a coincidence, and we would never imply otherwise.

The Outhouse supports Newsarama's bold stance on the issue of online bitching in general. We, too, feel that comic book fans thrive on righteous indignation, especially when there's an opportunity to play the role of white knight, which the Superior Spider-Man controversy provides. We just probably wouldn't choose to fight that battler over a comic that is, no matter how you look at it, pretty damn rapey. Well, unless Marvel was interested in purchasing one of our ad boxes on the right side of this page. Preferably one of the large ones. Then we'd think about it.

Seriously. Call me.

Head on over to Newsarama and read the article for yourself so you can learn about how it's totally cool to feature a superhero forcing a sexual advance on a woman as long as you're only doing it on the cover to fool people into buying the comic. Hopefully, you will learn to be more reasonable in the future.

I said this:
