GoDaddy Superbowl Ad Provokes Nerdtroversy

A new superbowl ad from GoDaddy.com is enraging both nerds and women on the internet.

Source: The Mainstream Media

GoDaddy.com is famous for two things: controversial television advertisements that feature scantily clad women in sexual situations, and a shitty and incomprehensible domain and web hosting service. But the company is expanding it's horizons with its latest Superbowl ad, which brings the aforementioned scantily clad women in sexual situations genre together with the "its funny when a nerd gets a girl because that would never actually happen" genre. GoDaddy, that's not funny. It's offensive.

In the commercial, Jesse Hieman, a background extra who has appeared in TV shows and movies like Parks and Rec and Spider-Man portraying geeky characters, is involved in a make-out session with supermodel Bar Refaeli. Refaeli represents GoDaddy's sexy side, while Heiman represents their nerdy side.

Nerds all over the internet were in an uproar this morning, calling the commercial a sexist and misogynistic attack against tolerance, a shameless exploitation of nerd culture, and "worse than The Big Bang Theory." It even offended my wife, who called the commercial and the news coverage of it "mainstream bullying at its finest."

"I find the advertisement, which I've only read about and not seen, hurtful and offensive," said one comic book nerd, speaking in a stereotypical nerd voice. "The thought of being the subject of sexual advances by an attractive woman is terrifying to me. Does GoDaddy get off on increasing my anxiety? Worst. Commercial. Ever."

"This commercial exploits nerds. It exploits women. It exploits the viewers," explained Lou from Marvel Chicks Punching Butts, a popular feminist blog. "It exploits website owners. It exploits people who kiss. It exploits starving children in Africa. It exploits cats with half their ear cut off in sad commercials with Tori Amos music playing in the background. It exploits America."

The Outhouse, a site that stands up for the rights of people to never see, hear, or read anything that might possibly offend them, urges GoDaddy to reconsider their ad before it airs on Superbowl Sunday, potentially offending a huge audience of people who tuned into the big game for the simple pleasure of watching homophobes and accused murderers violently assault each other in America's greatest pastime. It's not too late to hire Yakov Smirnoff, Gallagher 2, or Dane Cook and produce a new ad that is neither offensive nor funny to anyone.

Here's a video of the kiss, which you can judge for yourself (but you had better judge it offensive, or you are a bigot):

I am honestly baffled by all the controversy with this, Big Bang and that kind of stuff. Maybe it's the hint of truth in the jokes that burns people.

Some people have a deep-seated insecurity that won't allow them to laugh at themselves.

I saw a preview of this commercial on NBC's "Super Bowl Commercials" special, and I'm no more offended now than I was on Wednesday.
