The writer discusses ending his 'Action Comics' run and teases more about his upcoming works 'Multiversity' and a 'Wonder Woman' project
Source: Newsarama Grant Morrison will be wrapping up his run on Action Comics with issue #s 17 and 18. He revealed that when he first came on to this title starting with the DC reboot the plan was for him to only do a 6-issue arc. Morrison wanted to incorporate some left over ideas from All Star involving a younger Superman. That didn't quite fit in with the Nu52 Superman designs so he decided to use Action Comics to create the back story of Clark Kent and how he became the icon known as Superman.
But then he did the story involving the Legion of Super Heroes which then lead to dealing with the implications of time-travel. Morrison thinks the Legion still fit in well to the overall story:
"It's not the current Legion. It's the Legion from a world where things didn't work out well ... they're from a future where the bad guys won."
He then decided to add Mxyzptlk to the mix as a way to illustrate Superman's life history from past, present and future all at the same time from a 5th dimensional perspective.
When asked about the apparent brashness when we first saw his young Superman:
"This new Superman is a tough guy, but he's kind-hearted and gentle. This is a Superman who absolutely believes what he does is right, all the time, because he's Superman, and he's right all the time because he's Superman."
Along the way Morrison also tossed in the alternate Superman from Earth-23 as a teaser and eventual lead-in to his upcoming Multiversity project which DC officially announced would be seeing print back in September. Multiversity will be a guidebook to all of the alternate 51 Earths, complete with a map of these other universes.
After Multiversity, Morrison will be tackling a Wonder Woman project. He can't reveal too much about it yet only that he has so far been doing very thorough research into mythology and "the entire history of feminism."
Action Comics #17 goes on sale February 20. Below are the covers and some interior art from this issue.
