If you can't make it to your local comic shop, a digital copy can be found here.

Ze rules:

Review as often or as little as you like. Once you've posted 5 reviews, you will be awarded 1 pick. You can post 5 reviews, right? That's a totally achievable goal and with day and date digital releases becoming the standard, it shouldn't matter if your shop ordered enough copies of this weeks comic or not.

When multiple Review Groupers have posted 5 (or more) qualifying reviews, they will be awarded their pick in the order that they qualified. What constitutes a qualifying review? Any review posted (with a score on a scale from 0-10, that's right 0!) within 1 calendar month of the thread going live. Reviews are to be at least 5 sentences long. It shows that a) you have at least read this week's pick and b) you have some unique insight into the comic.

Reviews posted while waiting in line for your pick will be applied to your next pick.

I'll be keeping track of everyone's progress with the newly christened Spreadsheet of Fantastic (RIP, Spreadsheet of Doom) and reporting the results in the Current Members list in the weekly OP. When it's your turn to make a pick, I will PM you. If you do not respond to me by Midnight EST the following Sunday, you will lose your pick and I will start a poll to determine that week's selection.

Any week in which we do not have a Review Grouper with 5 qualifying picks, we will determine the week's comic via poll.

If it's your week to pick, remember to keep it under $3.99.

Naturally, this new system is new and it may be necessary to make changes as we go.

Since no one has 5 reviews under their belt, a poll will go up to determine next week's pick.

Suggestions welcome.

I wouldn't call this issue bad. Having said that I can't say that it excited me either. I wasn't left with the desire to continue reading beyond this first issue. That's a problem, because that's one of the benchmarks in how I determine if a first issue works as a first issue. I will say that it somewhat did work as a first issue. The setting in Japantown in San Francisco looks to be interesting, and Coil, the main foe this issue was also interesting. So, there are some good ideas behind the writing. The thing is, the whole issue is interesting, but I can't say that it gave me any feeling beyond that. It's all interesting ideas without enough else to back those ideas up. As I said, it's not badly written, but it also not exactly an exciting read.

I'll give this a 5 out of 10. It's kind of average so a middle of the road score is what it gets.

Its a girl with a sword. Not since Red Sonja have we seen this combination of lethal weapon and gender mixed together in a comic package. Too bad this is Katana of DC Comics New 52, well not really new I'll just say 52. And 52 is the number this title will never reach, maybe 8 for an over-sized trade but this book will be gone within a year left hanging on the great DC dart board in the basement bathroom stall behind a door reading "Beware of the Lepoard." Under a capable writer Katana could very well be a classic tragic hero for DC to cart around their books, like Wolverine 35 years ago, but under its current regime this character will hold readers interest only long enough for the next DC #1 hits the stands, Vibe.

I'm sorry I wish I could be positive about this title but there is little reason to support it because it is destine for the great dollar bin in the sky.

4/10

I tried to read this issue, not because I have an interest in the character, but because I have an interest in seeing how Nocenti handles an ongoing again. It has been years since I've read anything by her, but I have fond memories of her work. Her run on Daredevil remains a favorite of mine. So, wow, Katina #1 is a major disappointment. The dialogue is atrocious. It's awkward and overwritten and completely a chore to read. Essentially, I had trouble finishing this issue and following the paper-thin story because I had trouble forcing myself to get through each world balloon. I just wanted everyone to shut up, so that I could enjoy the art. Sanchez's work is excellent. But his art is wasted on this meaningless dribble.

Have you actually gone back and tried to re-read any of that earlier stuff by Nocenti you're referencing there? I have tried to read some of her Daredevil issues within the last couple years, and they have all the same problems you're describing there to me.

Interesting. No, it's been 20 years at least since I've read them.

Here's a "review" for ya:

I was going to read this book, but when I noticed that "Katana" was wielding a cutlass on the cover, and not, you know... A katana...

I figured why bother, they were obviously phoning this one in.

Therefore, it fits with Nocenti's equally wrongheaded, stereotypical dialogue and characterization.
