Wow, I love DD #23. It feels very much like a comic from the late '60s or early '70s. The melodrama of Foggy's health. The beautiful friendship between him and Matt. The quick rundown of previous events and background on the hero to draw in new readers. A joke about Stiltman. The very basic color scheme. The way the story is told with traditional panels and large white margins. And the opening page with the worm's eye view of the Chrysler building, depicting New York as the coolest city on Earth. The only city where superheroes can plausibly exist. All of it is so utterly fantastic. Yeah, it feels very much like a comic book from the late '60s or early '70s, but one with much better dialogue.

This is as good as it gets for superheroes, as far as I'm concerned.

Did anyone pick up Justice League of America #1?

Daredevil #23

I really liked this issue. The first few pages had me thinking I was looking through Matt Murdock's memories -- as they were intended to. Then came the surprise that had me saying out loud, "Ok, that's interesting." Then came the personal stuff with Foggy which was fun in a more personal way. Then came the fight scene which was just plain fun. Overall, fun is the best word I can use for this issue. It was absolutely fun to read just about every stretch of the way.

A very fun 8 out of 10.

Daredevil #23

I don't really like Daredevil. Growing up, I always wrote him off as a watered down Batman analogue so I never collected his comics. The only reason why I gave this run a chance is because I was following Waid's Irredeemable/Incorruptible series' from BOOM before he started DD. Needless to say, Waid made me a true believer from issue #1. Things started to look shady by issue #16 and I was worried that that old feet of clay formula was going to show up; Matt's cray-cray and Foggy is turning into a bigger bitch than Lois.

This is what I love the most about Waid's writing style, though. He makes it all seem predictable and familiar and just when I'm about to roll my eyes at those comic book cliches, Waid throws a curveball and everything is new and fresh again. Issue #23 is probably my favorite issue to date. The conflict between Foggy and Matt has largely been resolved instead of being dragged out needlessly and the two of them are actually having fun with Daredevil instead of him being the bane of their relationship. Who develops relationships this fast anymore? I love the absence of padding. We await the lab results that have been weighing on Foggy's mind and start to uncover the mystery of who is the mastermind behind all the insidious acts against Matt to make him question his sanity. We get a glimpse at the scale of this operation and some great sequences to break up the drama. I don't think anyone paces a comic book as well as Waid does, he always takes time to write good action beats in his issues without resorting to too many talking head panels.

Not only does Matt stop the bad guys, he does it in time to be there for Foggy's test results. I'm not used to this upbeat shit, the hero is supposed to be overwhelmed by his work so that he constantly fails at his personal life. I like it. Then those last couple pages, oh goddamn, I still get choked up thinking about it. At 40 years old, I've been collecting comic books since before I could read them and I have seen it all. What I haven't seen is a writer make me care about a fictional character's mortality this much since Starlin dealt with Mar-vell's death. I literally feel heartache for Foggy's condition and it makes me weep to think of those last few pages.

Daredevil #23 has it all, not only is this series worthy of that Eisner but this is one of the single best comic books I have ever read.

Justice League America #1

Gimme a break, how the fuck is this supposed to compare to Daredevil? Another creatively bankrupt re-hash of the 80's in the form of the Detroit League redux. I was not really sold on the concept but I'm a huge Martian Manhunter fan and I couldn't bring myself to follow Stormwatch, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

So like I've always done on first read I just look at the artwork. Not bad at all, design is appropriate, good sequential storytelling even though a lot of it is talking head dialogue, it's varied enough to be interesting and there's a few action beats to keep things moving but c'mon, I just finished reading Daredevil #23 FFS. I'm not sure I even care enough to read through JLA to find out what all the bubs are about. So I don't for four days. Fuck it, I'll read New Avengers instead.

I'm not even sure I would have given this book much thought if I didn't want to review it for Group. So last night I read through all that text and lo and behold much to my surprise, it's pretty fucking good. The concept is sound; the JLA isn't some weak-assed spin off, they're a slightly more socially acceptable version of the Suicide Squad, one that's specifically designed to counter the Justice League and that's awesome. This is the best thing they could have done to showcase characters like Martian Manhunter and Hawkman who are often marginalized because they tend to be kind of redundant in JL lineups. Now alot of these Nu incarnations are unfamiliar to me but I got a real kick out of them, especially MM, who is as scary and powerful as he aught to be, Katanna with her killer status rivalling Deathstroke and most of all Hawkman.

I know I'm late to the party but this Hawkman kicks ass. His way of rationalizing violence against humans by embellishing the paperwork later to indicate they were involved in alien threats on Earth was priceless. I'm eagerly awaiting the impending ideological debates with Green Arrow.

All in all this was a great start to a very interesting premise, I'm eagerly awaiting the next issue. I didn't care for the Nu 52 much at all outside of WW and Aquaman up until recently but lately I've been warming up to some of their stuff. H'El got me buying Supergirl and Superman, Throne of Atlantis and Shazam got me back into JL and now JLA, which I gotta admit is starting off a hell of a lot stronger than its parent comic did.

Daredevil #23 - Daredevil has been one of the best superhero comics for the past 22 issues. With issue #23 Daredevil joins Marvel NOW. What's different besides the banner? Essentially nothing. You get the same creative team and the continuation of the same story lines. Believe me, this is a good thing.

The comic opens it's first four pages with a retelling of Daredevil's origins, with a twist, for all two people that don't know Daredevil's origin by now. I didn't know they had cellphone's back when Daredevil was a kid. Afterwards you get some great interaction with Matt and Foggy, with some real serious moments regarding Foggy's health and an awesome stilt-man joke. You get some fun action sequences and an emotional ending too. What more could you ask for? Chris Samnee is serviceable on art, not awesome. Another great Daredevil issue. Nuff said.
