Variant Cover by Ed McGuinness

Move over Avengers…the Guardians got this.
Star-Lord. Gamora. Drax. Rocket Raccoon. Groot. …and the Invincible Iron Man?!
The Marvel Universe just got bigger as the legendary cosmic epic returns in the hands of superstar creators Brian Michael Bendis (Avengers, All-New X-Men) and Steve McNiven (Civil War; Old Man Logan).
In this special prelude issue meet the man behind the Guardians: Star-Lord… and discover how this child of Earth became the leader of the rag-taggiest of teams in all the Galaxy. All setting the stage for next month’s historic Guardians of the Galaxy #1. This is the start of something big, Marvel fans.
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Ze rules:

Review as often or as little as you like. Once you've posted 5 reviews, you will be awarded 1 pick. You can post 5 reviews, right? That's a totally achievable goal and with day and date digital releases becoming the standard, it shouldn't matter if your shop ordered enough copies of this weeks comic or not.

When multiple Review Groupers have posted 5 (or more) qualifying reviews, they will be awarded their pick in the order that they qualified. What constitutes a qualifying review? Any review posted (with a score on a scale from 0-10, that's right 0!) within 1 calendar month of the thread going live. Reviews are to be at least 5 sentences long. It shows that a) you have at least read this week's pick and b) you have some unique insight into the comic.

Reviews posted while waiting in line for your pick will be applied to your next pick.

I'll be keeping track of everyone's progress with the newly christened Spreadsheet of Fantastic (RIP, Spreadsheet of Doom) and reporting the results in the Current Members list in the weekly OP. When it's your turn to make a pick, I will PM you. If you do not respond to me by Midnight EST the following Sunday, you will lose your pick and I will start a poll to determine that week's selection.

Any week in which we do not have a Review Grouper with 5 qualifying picks, we will determine the week's comic via poll.

If it's your week to pick, remember to keep it under $3.99.

Naturally, this new system is new and it may be necessary to make changes as we go.

Since no one has 5 reviews under their belt, a poll will be put up to determine next week's pick.

Suggestions welcome.

UGH. Bendis my pull list is swollen enough thanks to your enjoyable X Comics, stop writing so well. This was a good issue dammit.

This issue contains a series of science fiction cliches, and moves from one predictable plot point to the next. And this issue also contains some awkward spaceman dialogue that reinforces everything that I find contemptible about cosmic comics. Yet, all that being said, I still enjoyed this comic. It moves at a solid pace; it has a few touching character moments; and the one violent scene, the attack on Starlord's childhood home, is powerful.

This intro issue suggests that Bendis' GoG will be entertaining, but hardly mind blowing: a book for Bendis. McKniven, and Guardians fans, but hardly an essential read. I will not be reading this series, that's for sure.

7/10

Ok I was a big fan of the DnA cosmic stuff, so with the marvel NOW! cosmic "reboot" I had my trepidations about both this and Nova. But Bendis is a great writer and Mcaniven is fantastic so I had hope. And overall the story was really good. Emotional and fun. Bendis is really back on his A-game. He's toned back the jokey attitude and lengthy conversations that were the trademark of his Avengers stuff and has replaced it with strong character development. mcNiven's art is solid like always. He seems to have a good handle on the Guardians for the two pages they were on. But there are a few problems...

By the end of this issue it seems my fear is realized and that the "reboot" is actually a reboot with no even brief mention of the DnA stuff.the Guardians are an established cosmic team and Star-Lord hadn't just escaped the crack in soace where DnA left him. This isn't new for Bendis since his last couple years with the Avengers it appears he doesn't read any comics but his own not acknowledging  things other creators have done with characters. His Guardians of the Galaxy doesn't seem to be any different. Also McNiven's art was great, but the middle was reprinted pages from the Point One from a few months back so I don't know if he'll be consitant on the book.

In light of those issues it's still solid sci-fi, solid Bendis, and still the Guardians so I'm on board.

7/10 (also there's a funny type-o in the end when they say issue 1 came out the same day as this issue.)

I really liked this issue, one of the better ".1"s out there
Bendis did a very good job of making this a special book giving a nice back story without making it NEEDED for #1. Besides the recent GotG books I am very unfamiliar with Starlord and am very grateful for the history lesson (and I don't even care if its a retcon).

All that being said, without McNiven's art I do not think the book would have had the emotional impact it had - I almost called my mom after reading it.

great book

So these are the Guardians of the Galaxy. I vaguely remember these guys from Claremont's X-men days when Cyclops' Dad was the leader of the group and he was fucking that cat-lady.

Oh, wait a minute, those were the Starjammers.

Nevermind then. These are the Guardians of the Galaxy, my mistake. So what are these guys all about? There's a movie coming out soon so they matter again. On first scan through just looking at the pictures it's all pretty straight forward with the standard cliches. Starman meets woman, they grow to love each other until his craft is finished then he bails, conveniently before the first tri-mester. This scenario always makes me laugh. Every time I have climaxed inside a woman, I've been extremely keen on whether or not the next menses showed up but not Super-heroes. Oh no; find 'em, feel 'em, fuck 'em and forget 'em.

"Sorry Lois, It's not you it's me, there's a mission in Space."

So I decide to just start reading because cliched shit like this doesn't deserve that much of my attention. Ten years later, the kid's keen on comic books! META!!! When he goes to school, the little space Aristocrat is also keen on anti-bullying. He's no Hugo Danner when it comes to beating up school yard bullies but he tries. He's a good kid cause his Dad's royalty and we all know how fucking awesome Monarchies are. Then Mom gets found out by Badoon! I guess Dad is dead, or just never bothered to ensure his Earth Strange/Baby Momma is safe. The kid is upstairs when he gets Wayne'd and the Badoon are coming for him. Fortunately, his mother was a gun owner who didn't store her weapon securely (Suck it Twigg!) so the kid blasts the bad guys. While this is all settling in, Dad's space gun is found just before the rest of the house is destroyed by remaining Badoon aboard their spaceship.

Fortunately, Charlie don't surf and Badoon don't scan, so the boy escapes into the woods and they fly away. Poor kid. All alone in the hospital and his Mother is dead but that's ok cause he's got a second chance at life and a new toy space gun. He's a Star Lord made of sterner stuff. He overcomes all obstacles because Aristocrats always rise to the top. From bouncing around orphanages to NASA to...commanding a crew of aliens and Iron Man aboard a space cruiser that would make Kirk hard, inside of four panels and a handful of captions? WTF? Is this sequential art or segue art? Oh well, good news for us but the cliches don't end there...oh no.

Now that everyone is, FOR THE RECORD, all in, Star Lord is going to show those Big ol Bad Badoon how it's done! Here comes the GAME CHANGING TIPPING POINT!!!

:smt026

Fuck me. This kind of shit makes me ashamed of comic books. Makes me ashamed to admit I'm a fan of the genre let alone the medium. The meat of the story is a techno dance remix of all your favorite cliched story elements BUT then the most interesting part of the story; how a boy grows to manhood and gets through NASA and somehow starts the Guardians of the Galaxies, is completely glossed over. So not only is this issue criminally derivative, it's fucking boring too.

2/10 still feels generous. I want my money back and this entire fucking franchise is now dead to me.

BTW, here's the real story behind the Arisotcrats. Enjoy!!! :D

As first issue go this was pretty good, it was nicely self-contained, did a good job of introducing to anyone just what this series is going to be about, and made me interested to read where things go from here. So, it accomplished what you want a first issue to accomplish.

This issue was essentially an origin issue for Star-Lord and that's not a bad thing as I really like him as a character. I can't say that I like some of the changes that Bendis had made to Peter Quill's history. Having said that, I still enjoyed what I read, so the changes didn't bother me all that much.

In the end I don't think I'd call this one of the most amazing things I've ever read, or even ever read from Bendis. It is good though, and a good read.

I'll give this a 7 out of 10.

FYI I'm with Ru on this, I've been waiting for Bendis to write a cosmic book for awhile and this didn't disappoint.
