The series started off strong, but quickly went downhill. The first one was a LOT of fun. Part 2 wasn't as good, but that wasn't really a surprise. Part 3 was awful and part 4 (watching it right now) seems to be okay.

Where did it go off the tracks?

What did you like about the series?

And, if you "fix" or change anything, what would it be?

Honestly, I probably would have just stopped with the first movie.

I thought they fixed a lot of the problem with number 4: get rid of Bloom and Knightly.

This. I didn't care for the second, didn't watch the third or fourth ones. I just pretend they didn't happen. Like the Mummy sequels.

They did, and it was a much better movie than 2 and 3. Then again, since it was based on a book that Disney bought the rights to and then adapted into a Pirates of the Caribbean film, it was bound to be better due to having a more solid creative base than 2 and 3.

The sequels were about as "good" as the Matrix sequels.

Although they had a couple of interesting moments, the writers seemed to think that if something was mentioned ever so briefly in the first movie, the next two movies should center around it.

And the execs seemed to realize they had a moneymaker on their hands and forgot what made the first movie so much fun.

From what I hear, they didn't even have a finished script when they started filming the third PotC movie.

Although, in retrospect, if they had just stopped at the first movie it's highly unlikely that we ever would have been given the Lonely Island and Michael Bolton masterpiece "Jack Sparrow."

I think that one of the biggest mistakes that the series made, was keeping Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightley. Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann's story should have ended in the first movie and the series should have continued around the misadventures of Captain Jack Sparrow.

Also... Chow Young Fat's character and ESPECIALLY the character of Norrington were criminally wasted in the third PotC.

Oh no doubt. I really didn't like the development of Norrington's character in the sequels because I liked the fact that even though he was kind of a dick, he was still honorable. That went out the door in the sequel and it didn't return until his final scene in the the third movie.
