DC Shocker: Fialkov Left GLC Due to Planned John Stewart Death

THe writer allegedly left due to editorial wanting to kill John Stewart.

Source: BleedingCool

RIch Johnston is earning his Christmas bonus this year.  The Bleeding Cool ne'er-do-well is reporting that Josh Fialkov left DC due to the company wanting to kill off Green Lantern John Stewart.  Stewart, one of DC's most prominent black superheroes, has been shunted off into a secondary role as of late with the resurgence of Hal Jordan, but the character has enjoyed popularity from mainstream fans due to the character's appearance in Green Lantern Corps.

"After seeing all the press from the Orson Scott Card debacle, we decided we wanted to do something even more boneheaded," said one unnamed DC editor.  "And then we realized we hadn't killed a minority character in like three months!"

DC has a long and proud history of killing off minority superheroes.  In fact, back in 2010, a list was distributed around the blogosphere of 22 minority legacy superheroes that have been killed or otherwised screwed by DC.  DC is all about history, it seems, even when that history is an uncomfortable whitewashing of their heroes.

Anyways, I'm sure this will go over well with fans.  In fact, I see a bunch of them now, all of them wielding pitchforks and torches.

It's always a good idea to kill one of the most well known black characters in comics today.

And people have always wondered why I'm so sure that Dan and the Gang are THE ABSOLUTE most piss-poor stewards of the DC stable possible. DiDio-era DC simply DOES NOT get these characters, DOES NOT understand how to utilize them to any positive effect.

I'm not going to say that any character should be untouchable or anything and that this couldn't make for a good story...

... but when this comes from the top down like this, it's a lot harder.

Ok, i'll be the one to say it: we don't know this is true. All we know is Rich Johnston says this.

And frankly, it doesn't fit Rich's usual style. If it WERE true, Rich's story would have been "I know a juicy bit of info from inside DC, but I can't tell you. But believe you me, it's a roost, and it's SUPER SERIAL, YOU GUYS."

Then, months later, after Stewart's death, a second BC article linking back to the first, saying "Remember? I told you months ago. Well, I hinted. Well, I told you I knew something, and how can you possibly say I'm making this up?"

And the real reason why the animated series was cancelled becomes clear. If the choice was to have John show up (which was hinted that he might in season 2) or pull the plug on the show, the choice was obvious. :x

So can we finally pin down the definition of "toxic character" now? It means strong black or female character?

CBR has independently confirmed .... When approached by CBR News for this story, DC Comics had no comment

So is that another way to say that Fialkov confirmed it to CBR or ... :smt017

Pretty much any character who dare challenge DC's beloved nostalgia kicks i.e. Hal Jordan, Barry Allen, and Barbara Gordon.

More than likely yes. Fialkov can't outright confirm given DC has clamped down on creators publicly airing their grievances with the Gail Simone fiasco in December.

Did nobody else see this coming? John's days were numbered as soon as GL Simon Baz Luhrmann showed up. You can't have two black GLs, you just can't.

I also heard awhile back that Didio wanted to kill Nightwing off but was talked out of it.
