DC Shocker: DC Forgets About Hellblazer History

DC lauded the arrival of Constantine #1 as the character's first ever DC comic book. They were wrong.

Source: Twitter

DC is really having a banner day today.  When they aren't losing creators or crediting the wrong creative teams on books, they can't even seem to remember their own history.

Case in point:

His first ever DC series? That's because Hellblazer started off as a Vertigo title, right?

Wrong.

See the DC shield on that upper righthand corner?  Yup, Hellblazer was in fact a DC published comic for several years, with Constantine even mentioning superheroes in at least one issue.  While the comic eventually broke away from DC continuity into its own universe, it started off as a part of DC's universe.

While it seems pedantic to harp on a book that became synonymous with Vertigo as being a DC comic, there's nothing comic book fans appreciate more than knowing one's history.  If only DC's marketing department could say the same.

Even when Hellblazer first became a Vertigo title (with #63, which means it was a DC book for more than five years), it still initially took place in the DCU. Zatanna and the Phantom Stranger appeared in that very issue, in fact.

And JLD could easily be called Johnny and the Capes, as John has been the main character in most of that sorry comic's run.
