Marvel Announces

The ongoing will be written by Nick Spencer, with art by Steve Lieber.

Source: Newsarama

Marvel has announced a new Superior Foes of Spider-Man series, focusing on a group of D-list villains that include a new female Beetle, perennial joke Shocker, Speed Demon, Overdrive, and Boomerang.  The series will be written by Nick Spencer, with art by Steve Lieber.   According to Newsarama, the five foes will form a new Sinister Six and will explore the villains knowing that something is different with Spider-Man.

While we weren't privy to any special details about the comic, we did manage to imagine what the pitching meeting was like:

Nick Spencer:  And Boomerang's going to be the main character.  He's like sooooo freakin' real.  He's the realest character I know.

Steve Wacker: Maybe it's all the pot that I've smoked today, but this sounds like the greatest comic ever. How long do you have this plotted out for?

Spencer:  Like 100 issues.  This thing is going to sell like hotcakes.

Dan Slott: Hotcakes?  I love hotcakes!  We need to go to IHOP.  Just let me finish telling this message board guy that I banged his mom last night and we can get some pancakes.

Wacker: So, we're in agreement.  IHOP for dinner and a new series about Spider-Man's least known foes in July.

Slott:  Best.  Pitch.  Meeting.  EVER!!!

Shocker isn't D-list! He's a solid C. The rest of these chumps aren't fit to clean his shocky glove thingies.

It's ab obvious take on the supposedly "Superior" Spider-Man not being as "superior" to the original as he thinks he is. So obviously, the villains wouldn't be as "superior" they think they are, either.

Obviously there's a sixth member whose entry will be a SURPRISE. It has Shocker and Boomerang and other rogues of Spidey. That by itself adds it to my pull list.

The book won't just feature these villains in their costumes pulling off crimes, though; the plan is to explore the secret identities of the villains in a way usually reserved for heroes.

"A big part of this book is definitely showing you the life behind the costume. A lot of the time we spend with them, the masks are off. That was actually my pitch here: that these guys, they're actually a lot like Spider-Man, in the classic sense of the character," said Spencer. "They don't have the innate nobility or the desire to do the right thing, but they're hard-luck stories, just like Peter Parker is/was. They're not shooting for the stars so much as trying to survive. Every time they win in one part of their lives, they lose in another. So there's something intrinsically cool and intriguing about that mirror aspect of the relationship."

Sounds like one of those "E! Behind The Scenes" TV episodes :-D

I just find it funny that Marvel is taking a concept that be easy money for DC. A book entirely made for Flash's Rogues.
