Disney Shuts Down LucasArts, Lays Off Staff

Disney is closing the LucasArts game publishing subsidiary.

Source: Game Informer

After evaluating our position in the games market, we've decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company's risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we've had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.

LucasArts has been on a downward spiral in recent years, with several games that had a good buzz initially and lost steam quickly and outright failures on top of that.  Their management has been changing far too often to offer them a fighting chance at rebuilding their direction.  The most impressive looking game in recent years Star Wars 1313, which was debuted at last years E3, seems to have completely fallen off the radar, creating rumors the game had ceased production.  Perhaps Disney will be able to rebuild the Star Wars and Indiana Jones game licenses.

Not surprising. Merchandising is where the $$ is at. Disney's corporate year must end in June. Hopefully those laid off will find work right away.

I was hoping they'd make Disney games.

On topic, really stupid decision. Especially cancelling 1313 and the new downloadable pre cursor to battlefield 3.

You don't completely take apart a well known gaming studio for really no reason.

More known for its past success than current so it not unreasonable to see Disney make this move. If they can licence the franchise out to a more successful studio no operation cost on them.

The Lord of the Monkeys is very sorry for the people laid off, but hey, silver lining: if they're going to be farming out licenses to more-currently successful companies... Maybe we can finally get a non-shitty sequel to SW:KOTOR.

KOTOR 2, conceptually, was far from shitty ... it was just buggy as hell and unfinished. The restoration project is actually pretty awesome now that it's finished.
