Home-Hunting: Do You Compromise?

Postby Keb » Mon Apr 08, 2013 9:20 am

Hey, so if you're out house-hunting or apartment-hunting and you come across a place you like but it doesn't meet ALL of your standards, do you compromise?

I'm gonna be hunting for an apartment or some sort of dwelling very soon. I'm going from upscale waterfront properties to god-knows-what and I'm just wondering where to compromise if I have to...

unless you're allergic I wouldn't discount a place just because it has rats. They'll keep the bugs away.

one time I was showering and I noticed a centipede hanging out on the side of shower liner right up at eye level. There was 24 year old, buck naked me, screaming like a little girl at the sight of a harmless bug

I had to chase around a centipede yesterday because my wife was worried it'd kill us in our sleep or something.

Back to the topic at hand. I think you need to prioritize what's important to you in a place to live. It's easier to compromise if you're planning on staying there for a while, but you should go into homehunting with a few "absolutes", things that you know you'd be miserable without.

as a general rule, don't compromise on something hazardous or potentially dangerous.

and bring a friend how's handy or an older relative who knows about construction of any sort.

always always hire an inspector before you rent or buy.

termites, bedbugs, asbestos.....make sure they check the whole 9 yards.

Yeah they used to come into our old house and chill on the walls and ceilings. I used to have to leave the room. Ugh.

try to check out the neighbors.

do they have loud dogs?

are they on the floor above you w/ kids and no carpet?

are there good places to eat nearby?

these are little things you have to look into if you find a place you like.

Some people who don't have a dishwasher in their homes compromise by making their kids do dishes. That's how it was growing up for me.

Dishwasher is easy to live without. So is microwave. Stove is not.

Agreed.

When my wife and I were looking to buy, we made a list of things that we absolutely needed to have. If the house didn't have those things, we weren't interested. Luckily, most of those things were easy to discern from the description of the house (number of bedrooms, distance from public transit, etc.). Outside of that, there are things we wanted, but which weren't essential, and then everything else.

We looked at A LOT of homes before we finally bought one. We did have to compromise on size, since we both would have preferred a place with more square footage, but there were other factors that were ultimately more important to us.
