Back to the topic at hand. I think you need to prioritize what's important to you in a place to live. It's easier to compromise if you're planning on staying there for a while, but you should go into homehunting with a few "absolutes", things that you know you'd be miserable without.
When my wife and I were looking to buy, we made a list of things that we absolutely needed to have. If the house didn't have those things, we weren't interested. Luckily, most of those things were easy to discern from the description of the house (number of bedrooms, distance from public transit, etc.). Outside of that, there are things we wanted, but which weren't essential, and then everything else.
We looked at A LOT of homes before we finally bought one. We did have to compromise on size, since we both would have preferred a place with more square footage, but there were other factors that were ultimately more important to us.
