![]() Failing to finish off the digital comics platform in their first attempt, Marvel hopes to finally get the job done starting April 11th. Source: Press Release The last time Marvel Comics offered 700 #1 issues of its comics for free on Comixology, they struck a blow against the digital comics platform that not only disrupted service on the site, but also shook the faith of users of the platform in the durability of the service. By making it impossible for users to access their comics, stored securely in the cloud as a toothless anti-piracy measure, readers were made aware of the fact that they don't actually "own" the comics they've purchased through the service or any of the brand-specific apps based off of it. With digital comics readers on the ropes from that attack, Marvel plans to put the final nail in the digital coffin when they offer those 700 issues for free again. "You may have escaped this time, Comixology!" is what we imagine Marvel CCO Joe Quesada shouted from atop his hovering Goblin Glider after last month's giveaway. "But I'll be back!" "Mwahahahaha," he probably added before tossing exploding pumpkin bombs into a crowd of onlookers and flying off into the night. This time, Marvel is asking that customers head over to a special promotional page and register to be notified of the giveaway. Ostensibly, the idea is that they can invite people to choose their free issues in groups, reducing the load on Comixology's servers, but the plan is probably designed to crash the beleaguered digital comics platforms servers twice: once during registration, and once during the actual transactions. Marvel, as part of a secret group of comic book industry illuminati, has engaged in a plot to make digital comics unattractive to customers by keeping price points unnaturally high and locking away the actual files on cloud servers that could disappear at a moments notice. All of this is in the name of protecting the 'Direct Market," a monopoly that forces all printed comic books to be distributed by Diamond to local retail stores that use advanced techniques such as "bad smells" and "Magic: The Gathering tournaments" to repel new readers and ensure that comics are a niche market consisting only of aging fanboys with the constitution to enter local comic shops and purchase decompressed superhero chapbooks for $3.99. Allegedly. If you'd like to help Marvel in its quest to finally destroy Comixology once and for all (and with their obnoxious penchant for spelling their brand with the X capitalized instead of the C, which we refuse to indulge, who could blame you?) head over to the registration page and sign up to be notified when your chance to strike is at hand. Here's the press release: MARVEL #1: Over 700 #1 Issues Available For FREE! Begin with the biggest and best super heroes in comics! New York, NY— April 8th, 2013— Everyone remembers their first comic book, and now – Marvel is giving you over 700 of them FOR FREE with Marvel #1! Anyway, I'm glad they're doing this again. Gonna grab the comics I missed the first time around. ![]() |

That's what I gather. Anyway, if all of the comics that were free last time are included (along with some new Marvel NOW #1's that came out recently), you'll easily be able to find entire trades in single issue form. Examples: Big Hero 6 collection of the Chris Claremont's mini. Spider-Man/X-Men Digital Spectacular collection Spider-Man/X-Men and some old-school Claremont stories. The Siege one-shots. The Captain American and...one-shots. Various annuals including a few Joe Kelly Deadpool comics. The Thor: Ages of Thunder specials (aka the best Thor work that Matt Fraction has put out). |
