Next week's pick:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Villain Microseries #1 (of 4): Krang

Image

Joshua Williamson (w) • Mike Henderson (a) • Tyler Walpole (c)
Krang was not always the feared warlord he is today. Once he was the spoiled prince of a falling dynasty. One disastrous mission to a penal colony planet changed all of that! Stranded by himself and surrounded by enemies, Krang faces the ultimate test for survival! See how this seemingly helpless alien grew to become a legend... and a leader!

So Kang just Casually picked him up in the 80's? Or 1700's? or before he was killed which ever time? But totally after En Sabah Nur defeats Kang as a pharoh in ancient egypt? I fucking hate continuity and time travel.

I assume this was the Apocalypse from that time period, that he hadn't travelled through time to get to the year 1013.

This issue was fucking sick. It took Remender 6 issues to finally hit his stride, but this is the Remender I grew to know and love from Uncanny X-Force and Venom. I can't help but feel that the blatant tie-ins in the Dark Angel Saga are a bit pandering, but when you get batshit crazy, super-creative results like this, who can complain?

I found Acuna's art more tolerable than normal too. Remender gave Acuna a lot of crazy visuals this issue (Thor slicing an eyeball man in half with his axe, Thor riding away from an exploding pyramid on a chariot drawn by goats), and Acuna proved more than up-to-the-task. Also, I don't know who colored these issues, but they're really making Acuna's work pop.

9/10

Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder (the goats) are actually drawn from Norse mythology. Thor has a chariot drawn by those two goats but their names are something else. They appeared in the Simonson run but I don't know if they were around before that.

edit: Acuna colored the art himself.

I'm not the biggest Thor fan, as I often find it to be pompous, boring, and long-winded. If a Thor like this exists elsewhere, please tell me about it, Keb, and I'll read it.

Read the frog issue of Thor (it was free on Comixology for a spell) and was surprised at how much I loved it.

Read Aaron's Thor, though, and couldn't stomach it. I think it's Esaad Ribic's art. Try as I might, I can't get into his work.

i know you're totally all-digital now, but the Simonson Omni is a special case you should make an exception for. it looks like a real book ( ), it's damn near perfect comics, and it is one of the rare things i would ever say is actually worth that cover price and then some.

you really should buy it and keep that monster on your shelf for all to see.

My roommate actually owns it. So, trust me, I'll be reading it all in due time. :)

However, if I'm going to be buying an omnibus, it'll be THIS motherfucker:

Image

This easily contains some of my all-time favorite superhero comics. I hope they put out a volume 2!

The young axe-weilding Thor is from Thor: God of Thunder by Jason Aaron. That's all I can tell you as I don't read it. I have issue 1 from the digi-free-thing to download.

Simonson Thor is a really good take on Thor. I'm going through it a second time right now. It's a long, slow, arduous read but it's been totally worth it. You have to sit down and read it in increments, like 1-3 issues at a time, but it's a lot of fun. There's a lot going on and every issue is packed with story.

Alright, I went back to my LCS and picked this issue up out of curiosity and the positive reviews that I saw here. Apocalypse has always been one of my favorite X-Villains and the original Age of Apocalypse is still one of my favorite crossover events of all time but I guess I never really took the time to consider that Apocalypse might be able to go toe-to-toe with the likes of Thor. I liked the fact that they really highlighted young Thor's impetuousness. So hot-headed, Thor never took the time to consider that just walking away from the initial battle with Apocalypse may have been victory enough. Now Kang has a weapon, forged by the gods, and capable of slicing through Celestial armor.

For me personally, the weak point of this issue is exactly what I thought it would be. While not as bad as most of his past work, Daniel Acuña's art is still simply not for me. I would have preferred that somebody like Olivier Coipel would have stayed on or since this was a Thor-centric issue, even Thor: God of Thunder's Esad Ribić but all things considered, I think this story may have won me over enough to make me look past Acuña's until the next arc.

7/10
