Mark Waid’s Daredevil reaches it’s quarter-century, and this anniversary delivers what may be the best issue of an already exemplary run. This issue is a culmination of a lot of what has come before, and introduces just one of the villains who have been manipulating Matt Murdock lately. That villain is ‘Ikari’ a dude that looks like a Japanified version of Daredevil’s original red and yellow costume, and he has all of DD’s powers… and more.

The fight between him and Daredevil takes up most of the issue and it is one of the best comic book fights I’ve read in ages. Waid and Chris Samnee just rock the shit out of it. I’d be interested in seeing whether this was written ‘Marvel-Style’ or not, but it doesn’t really matter. I also really dug the way it was interspersed with flashbacks to Matt’s training from Stick, I don’t know why, but I’m just a sucker for flashbacks that happen during action scenes, for some reason they just work better for me than normal ones.

The final kicker to this issue is a brilliant one, Ikari has all of Daredevil’s powers as I said, but crucially… he’s not blind! That’s a great idea, and it provides Daredevil with a brilliant new nemesis in this post-Bullseye era. It’s also cool to see that Ikari’s (and whoever is behind him’s) plan is more than to just defeat Daredevil right now, they want him looking behind his back at all times, to really for the first time give him fear. It’s a genius idea, and one that of course plays into the core of the character. This issue was just amazing really, but then, every issue of this series has been amazing, if you haven’t read Waid’s Daredevil, drop everything and get the first trade right now. Do it!

I like Ikari.

He's a really good foe for Daredevil. My mouth dropped when he said, "Try the red one." I do have to wonder how his regular vision works with his radar sight. Bats, as an example, can't use their regular sight and their sonar at the same time and I wonder if Ikari might be the same.

great issue i agree. also telegraphed who the bad guy behind everything is though.

unless it's meant to be so obvious we'll guess wrong.

it's driving me freaking nuts that I can't figure it out. drop your theory in spoils so I can feel even dumber.

I don't know why, but it never even occurred to me that Ikari was 'supposed' to be blind. :smt102

So when the twist was revealed I was thinking - "Oh, I guess this is where I was supposed to go OMG".

Not saying the issue was bad, because it was great. Wonderful art throughout the fight sequence.

The Foggy/cancer subplot is lame and the sooner he dies or Hank Pym/the FF shrink themselves and destroy the tumor - will only make the book better.

It would be interesting to see what Lady Bullseye would think of Ikari.

yeah, I saw that coming a mile away too. Waid probably referenced Matt's assumption that he was blind too much in the monologue...it made it obvious a swerve (or non-swerve as the case may be) was coming.

I thought the person destroying Matt's life might be Hand-related, though I wonder if it is something connected to Matt's obvious work with Bruce Banner to blackmail S.H.I.E.L.D. The fact that Ikari has a Japanese name makes me think the former.

Really? Maybe this is just me.

In DD 24, we have Matt talking about how he's taken on a huge case on retainer that would upset Foggy if he found out. From issue 1 of Indestructible Hulk, we know that Bruce has someone holding onto blackmail materials for him. In Indestructible Hulk 4, Bruce calls this person and tells him he hopes he's enjoying his New York bagels. We know that they're going to crossover in the coming months, so Matt managing Bruce's blackmail seems like where this is heading

I absolutely never would have put that together (I'm clearly not paying enough attention to the details in IH), but that makes perfect sense.

When I look at Ikari he practically screams the Hand. And Hess days the Kingpin runs the Hand and he's been suspiciously quiet this whole time.

The Kingpin's too fat to fit inside that weird Iron Lung thing.
