Live-Action Kiki's Delivery Service In Production? [Updated With New Image]

Well, yes but maybe not what you'd expect.

Source: The Grudge's Shimizu Helms Live-Action Kiki's Delivery Service

In early April, rumors started to swirl around that there were plans to produce a live-action version of Studio Ghibli's beloved Kiki's Delivery Service (in Japan: Majo no Takky?bin ??????). A few days later, fans of the 1989 classic were disappointed to find out that Studio Ghibli denied any involvement with such a production.

Turns out, both items were true. Ghibli's film is based on the 1985 novel Majo no Takky?bin by Eiko Kadono (?? ??) and it was revealed that a live-action movie was being produced based on the original novel.

The film will be directed by Takashi Shimizu (?? ? of The Grudge/Juon fame!) and will star 16-year-old newcomer F?ka Koshiba (????) as Kiki/Minami Takayama. Unlike the Ghibli film which covered the single novel that was published at the time, the live-action version will use the first two novels as its basis.

The story revolves around the young witch spending a year  in a town apart from other witches (but with her cat Jiji), using her magic to earn a living. The live-action film is expected to fly into theaters in Spring 2014.

It'll be boring. The original film had the charm of it's maker and that was while he had some cache with the fans. They'll never duplicate it.

At least they aren't trying to do any of his other films.

Damn it, the kanji and accented characters aren't showing up in the forums. Go to the front page article if you want to see the text correctly.

:? First it’s being made, then it’s an April Fool’s joke, then it’s being made again but not really. And now it’s real again.

That's some shoddy reporting sd. :smt021

Well they'll be working off the original novels as source material. I'm not sure how close Ghibli's film was to that so can't comment on that.

Not that close I'd imagine and can recall.

The thing is, what made each of his films work was the kind of charm he injected as a film maker. If not there, it won't work. That and no way could they afford the FX needed to match the animated film.

At least it isn't Porco Rosso.

Porco Rosso is close to my favorite Miyazaki film.

Spirited Away probably gets the honor of being top dog.

PR is just so much fun.
