What with DC's 52 do you think that they got right? Instead of saying what was wrong, what was right or close to being right for you? What was interesting? Concepts? Characters? Costumes? What?

I have to admit, I think they got very little right for me. Aquaman was a great over all series but I felt at times that it was like reading Sub-Mariner comics.

Giving Superman a supersuit that could keep up with him was good, making it armor was bad as well as dropping certain visual characteristics of the costume was bad.

Some of the new take characters such as OMAC, The Ray and The Atom are intriguing, but not much more to hook me.

Wonder Woman being Zeus' daughter was a great idea as it fixes Donna as well as generates new meaning to the Wonder Woman family being a bunch of sisters. Also, it seemed to give a new twist on the old slant of her fighting Olympian gods and such.

The 7 year history was good too in concept but that was about it for me.

Uhhh, I can barely think of anything more, but instead of being negative about the line, I thought it could be interesting to think and talk on the positives or possible positives.

Other than WW (which they could have left alone really...), nothing.

Wally is still not the Flash, Tim isn't Robin, Jason is now accepted back into the ranks even though he has murdered tons of people, Supes costume is dumb, Hal is still Hal, Vibe is part of a JL team again, The Atom is a girl, etc...

Maybe Shazam?

All in all, DC is a mess.

WTF is this rank?

Postby MrBlack » Tue Apr 30, 2013 11:23 am

I haven't read much of the new stuff DC has been putting out, not due to any criticism of their new direction, but because I mostly dropped out of comics well before the new direction. As a bit of an outside observer, however, I can toss out a couple of things that I've liked from the handful of New 52 comics I've read.

-Streamlining history. This was something that was a major complaint about the new direction of DC, but it has made the comics much more new reader friendly. There's just a lot less to know about if you want to dive in, with a couple of exceptions, and it allows for upending the expectations of longtime fans. Speaking of which...
-The Superman/Wonder Woman relationship. Sorry guys, but I like this. It presents some interesting story opportunities whether they stay together or break up.
-Superman and Wonder Woman's costumes. The Super-suit has grown on me, and it makes sense in-universe. I also like the new color scheme on Wonder Woman's costume. Not so fond of the others...
-Earth-2. I miss the original JSA, but Robinson's new version is intriguing.
-Scott Snyder on Batman. Not actually a consequence of the New 52, but he's done some great work.

Grant Morrison on Action Comics
Scott Snyder on Batman
Allowing Grant Morrison to continue Batman Incorporated in pretty much the same way.
Azzarello and Chiang on Wonder Woman
Johns' Aquaman and Green Lantern
The Animal Man/Swamp Thing axis
The Shazam! back-ups

no. no no no no no no no NO.

what they got right, IMO:
  • amazingly, giving a Flash book to Manapul...as a writer/co-writer. no, it's not Wally, but it IS a good Flash book
  • pretty much everything in the WW book. but nothing involving her outside of her own book.
  • DEMON KNIGHTS. for the love of holy fuck, I love this book.
  • pretty much the rest of the "Dark" line. I loved Snyder's Swamp Thing and the first 18 issues of Animal man (but dropped both after Rotworld ended), JL Dark has gotten better and better, I Vampire was a TERRIFIC book, even Resurrection Man started off pretty good before floundering -- DC did a good job putting talented creators on the characters in the darker corner of their universe and telling good stories with them...something they should be more concerned with doing across the board
  • making Aquaman important -- although I think Johns has oversold it a bit, and i'm no longer reading the book at the moment, it's good to see that character not treated as a punchline anymore
  • Batman & Robin -- man, this book has been great

Very little, unfortunately:

Wonder Woman is the best she has been since George Perez's post-COIE relaunch.
Snyder's Batman.
Snyder's Swamp Thing
I, Vampire.
Earth 2, so far.

....and that really is it. The reboot itself failed creatively because they took it as an excuse to reinvent characters that did not need reinventing, decided not to listen to the fans under any circumstances and also because it appears to be happening in a panic and without any kind of roadmap or strong guiding hand.

I like them, Frank's artwork is excellent and I think Johns is doing a very good job at updating Captain Marvel for the 21st Century and having it be faithful but also not cheesy as hell.

Nothing comes to mind really. A few moments here and there, but nothing sustained.

Well, except pushing me to indies.

I can't take you seriously any more.

What you're saying applies to Jeff Smith's version, the only good one that's really been done in the last decade.

This dreck I wouldn't line a bird cage with.

Johns and Frank's Shazam is an absolute shit sandwich.

Better:
Flash
Aquaman
Wonder Woman
Swamp Thing - Snyder
I, Vampire.
Earth 2
Shazam!
Animal Man
Demon Knights

I'm not counting GL, Batman, or Legion since they barely made any changes to those characters

Worse:
Superman
Hawkman
Green Arrow
Wildstorm characters

Meh:
Batgirl
Birds of Prey

I agree with Punchy. The Captain Marvel backups have been my main reason to keep purchasing JL.

As for my ramblings on what I think they got right:
- Batman family books, including Red Hood (it's kind of stupid, but it's a hell of a lot of fun). All of them except Dark Knight. Batman & Robin is the best of the bunch
- Supergirl, though I dropped it during the H'El on Earth arc and haven't gone back
- Animal Man, Swamp Thing, JL Dark, and Phantom Stranger are all really good. Constantine's first 2 issues were enjoyable, though not as good as Hellblazer was.
- Flash
- Green Arrow has finally gotten good under Lemire
- Green Lantern & Corps started great, but I dropped them when they started crossing over with the other two titles
- Suicide Squad started as a really fun book, and has only gotten bad in the last few issues. Hopefully the new writer can turn it back around.
- Earth 2 & World's Finest are two of my favorite DC books at the moment.
