English Question

Postby dairydead » Thu May 02, 2013 9:01 am

So, this has been bugging me for a while. Do we have any English scholars on this site? I've been trying to figure out how the correct way to phrase a possessive noun in certain sentences.

For example:
is it " Nintendo are the most family-friendly video game company out there today"

or, "Nintendo is the most family-friendly video game company out there today"

I see the first example increasingly almost exclusively on gaming and comic sites. I've always understood the second as correct, but I'm willing to be proven wrong.

It's 'is.' Nintendo is a company, singular.

For it to be plural, the sentence would have to be something like, "The staff at Nintendo are the most family-oriented..."

Just do not ask questions about commas then they break out the knives.

That's what I thought. No one likes a grammar pest, but I see it more and more. I've been told that its the proper British way of saying things, but that sounded dubious to me.

I've been trying to mess with semicolons a bit more recently.
