What does not work for the character is running around battling super-villains and being part of Justice League events.

Some restarts work, but only some. Wonder Woman seems to have worked and did with Perez in the 80s, though all he did was take Mars, make him badass and call him Ares.
I always like the original concept of Vertigo and the characters belonging to it. They are in the shadows of the DCU and can come and go as they pleased.
