Iron Man 3 Backlash Teaches Marvel Chinese People Aren't Idiots

In retrospect, all those years of kicking the crap out of us in economics, industry, and education should have been considered a clue.

Source: Kotaku

Did you know that Marvel created a special version of Iron Man 3 for Chinese audiences? Well, they did. Apparently, it's filled with all sorts of pandering to what executives thought would be more appealing to the Chinese, as well as blatant product placement for some Chinese milk drink. And the Chinese fucking hate it. And, really, what the hell did Marvel expect?

Normally, here at The Outhouse, we'd probably make up some ridiculous parody of what the Chinese scenes feature, but, honestly, there's nothing we could say that would make it funnier than it already is. Here's Kotaku's summary:

In Dr. Wu's office, you can see Tony's Iron Man on a TV screen, surrounded by Chinese children and what looks like...Dr. Wu. The good doctor then calls Tony, but J.A.R.V.I.S., the A.I. butler, answers. It's worth noting that in even in the subtitled version, there are no subtitles in this sequence; J.A.R.V.I.S. speaks in Mandarin Chinese. While speaking with J.A.R.V.I.S., Dr. Wu actually says in Chinese, "Tony doesn't have to do this alone—China can help."

There's also this extra long shot of Dr. Wu awkwardly pouring a glass of Yili brand Chinese milk. But it's pure product placement. Before the movie starts, there are two China specific ads: One of them is a Chinese milk commercial that, as The Hollywood Reporter points out, asks, "What does Iron Man rely on to revitalize his energy?" (The answer is a Yili milk drink.) The second commercial is for a Chinese manufacturer of tractors and cranes.

We'd love to believe this whole thing was just a misguided attempt to make up for the fact that the movie's main villain, The Mandarin, is one of the most offensively stereotypical Asian characters of all time, but clearly, it was simply motivated by greed and a lack of respect for the Chinese audience. In response to the controversy, many Chinese moviegoers are speaking out against the condescending nature of the extra scenes on blogs, which goes to show that maybe American movie studios should just have faith in the quality of the movie they're making and not try to use embarrassing pandering to a culture they clearly don't understand in an attempt to squeeze a few more dollars into the box office take.

In response to this criticism, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige allegedly told the press, "look, we don't want to offend anyone, and Marvel Studios always strives to be sensitive to other cultures. We would never intentionally use racially offensive stereotypes in our movies."

Okay, fair enough. It sounds like this was an innocent misunderstanding, and we should all give Marvel the benefit of the...

"Especially when you're talking about the Chinese," he added, folding his hands together and bowing repeatedly. "We wouldn't want them to use their genetically innate martial arts and computer hacking skills to launch a kung fu cyber attack on us or anything like that. We so sorry! We so sorry!"

God dammit.

I know the article is meant as mainly humor, but it's worth underscoring what really happened. It's been underreported here in the U.S. that Iron Man 3 has been an American/Chinese co-production from the beginning, with massive investment from China and their own Chinese Disney corporation. And with all those dollars came a lot of conditions, or at least quid pro quo. One of them is this Chinese-controlled cut of the movie, but there are many, many others.

Why should anyone find this disturbing? Because since the Olympics left, China has reneged on any promises made otherwise and begun imprisoning, among others, hundreds of writers (including Nobel Prize winner Li Xiaobo) and in some cases their families, taking them from their homes in the middle of the night.

Do we really want our media, our stories, created to satisfy one of the worst human rights offenders in the world, a gov't who acts with brutality against its own writers and artists to suppress their stories? Do we really want them sharing in the profits as well? Should movies that celebrate freedom be crafted to suit authoritarian repression and even fund more of it?

Today, a group of 100 writers sent an open letter to China, if you want to know more read the article at the link:

Salman Rushdie leads call for China to free dissidents

A group of prominent writers led by star novelist Salman Rushdie has called on the Chinese government to release dozens of jailed authors and allow freedom of speech, highlighting how Beijing’s authoritarian rule is undermining its quest for global soft power.
In an open letter signed by more than 100 writers including Ian McEwan, Nadine Gordimer and Mario Vargas Llosa, PEN International, the global writers’ group, said on Friday: “We celebrate the growing international recognition of Chinese artists from all disciplines, a development exemplified by Mo Yan’s 2012 Nobel Prize for Literature, and we welcome the ever-expanding avenues of cultural exchange.”

“We cannot, however, listen to China’s great and emerging creative voices without hearing the silence of those whose voices are forcibly restrained,” it added, citing the jailing of dissident writer Liu Xiaobo.
Mr Liu was sentenced to 11 years in prison for “inciting subversion of state power” on Christmas day 2009. A year later, China’s ruling Communist party reacted with fury when the jailed dissident was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Beijing lobbied hard against the decision and responded with vitriolic attacks on the prize.
The 2012 Nobel Prize triggered the opposite reaction from Beijing as Mo Yan, an officially sanctioned writer who has been careful not to violate the party’s political taboos, was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature – the first Chinese Nobel laureate who is neither in prison nor emigrated.
The PEN letter comes with the publication of a report assessing the developments of free speech in China in recent years.
The report says that while the development of the internet and in particular the take-off of social media have helped create bigger spaces for free speech in China, the authorities have stepped up persecution of writers. It cites more than 40 imprisoned for their work.
The report is part of a PEN campaign to draw attention to censorship and the persecution of writers in China ahead of its Universal Periodic Review in October, a process under which the UN monitors countries’ developments in safeguarding human rights.

Fly to China and help them imprison more writers, along with Captain America. Then Thor would punch the writers in their fucking faces. Because they're fascists.
