They were sent to Mars to search for evidence of prehistoric water systems, but two Nasa rovers appear to have found something very different. A new myth akin to the fallacy that the Great Wall of China is the only manmade structure visible from space could be in the offing after one of the Mars Exploration Rovers apparently drew a giant penis on the Red Planet’s surface. An image posted on a Nasa website appears to show one of Spirit’s or Opportunity’s tyre tracks leaving a very appendage-looking impression in the Martian dust. It is not known when the image was taken, but it attracted thousands of comments after being posted on Reddit, apparently briefly crashing the Nasa website it was originally posted on. CuriosityCuriosity: So far above crude drawings on Mars (Picture: Reuters) One commenter wrote: ‘Oh god yes! My respect for Nasa was already super high, but now it just hit space.’ Spirit and Opportunity were launched in 2003 and are thought to have already traversed 10km of the Martian surface, although contact was lost with Spirit in 2009 when it became stuck. Opportunity meanwhile is still on its way towards the Endeavour crater. Last year they were joined on the Red Planet by Nasa’s $1.5billion rover Curiosity, which has so far not stooped to the immature levels of its rover cousins. ![]() |
