RIP Dan Adkins

The Silver Age artist died last week.

Source: J Morgan Spurlock's Facebook

Dan Adkins, a Silver Age penciller and inker, has passed away.  Adkins is best known for his cover art on Dr. Strange and his work as a penciller and inker for Marvel in the 1960s and 1970s.  Adkins worked as Wally Wood's assistant in the 1960s and collaborated with him on a number of horror stories for Creepy and Eerie.  Adkins' work appeared in over 800 comic books, and was considered to be one of Marvel's strongest early inkers.  Adkins was 76.

I first discovered Dan in Fantastic Four #166...

I knew enough about creators at this point that I knew Joe Sinnott didn't ink the cover (nor the inside hideously inked by Vince Coletta).

As I plunged into back issues I guess it was my early love for Sub-Mariner that first took notice of him. First with Subby's last issue but also with his much earlier stuff...

But it was his Doctor Strange that he really was best at as artist

But as good as he was as a penciler - his real claim was his inking. After Joe Sinnott, Dan was easily my second favorite inker (especially for Gil Kane)...

But also the likes of Kirby, Garcia-Lopez and Wood as well...

I always wished he did more DC work.

RIP.

Just noticed this thread. Loved his inks on Gil Kane's art.
