It was still more SF than western.

And calling either Firefly or Defiance a western is like calling West Side Story, which was based on Romeo and Juliet, a work of Shakespeare.

Both shows have an obvious wild west, frontier theme. Not every western has to take place literally in the western part of the USA. The genre is more than just geography.

And The Doctor travels through time and space in a ship that looks like a Police Box. Does that make Doctor Who a police procedural?

Using that philosophy, you could call something like The Red Badge of Courage or Gone With the Wind or The Last of the Mohicans a western. Which I don't.

In the Firefly companion Joss Whedon says he intended Firefly to be Stagecoach type of drama.

Every single description of the show describes at as a Space Western

You're being thick if you don't see that.

It's still not a true Western. It's a SF show with Western themes.

By the way, you said "Every single description of the show describes at as a Space Western"

IMDB Describes Firefly as Action/Drama/Sci-Fi.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303461/?ref_=sr_1

There goes your argument.

I'm not the one that made the broad, unprovable statement.

Firefly/Serenity is SF. SF with western themes yes. But it's still SF. Get over it.
