Chris Hayes is a ratings disaster for MSNBC

Postby Juan Cena » Mon May 06, 2013 7:16 pm

April was a ratings disaster for MSNBC. The Boston Marathon Bombing is one factor, as viewers flocked to CNN or FOX for news rather than MSNBC.

That doesn't mean replacing Ed Schultz with Chris Hayes didn't factor in it.

Another factor in MSNBC’s ratings reversal may be attributed to Griffin’s decision to replace Ed Schultz, 59 with Chris Hayes, 34, at 8:00 PM…all in an effort to draw younger viewers. But after one month, All In with Chris Hayes is down 18 percent from The Ed Show‘s audience for the same month last year. As for enticing those younger viewers, Hayes finished last in the demo in April.

I said it was a stupid move. I was right. last time I checked, Cooper was still beating Hayes a week after the hubub about Boston calmed down. Ed (and KO before him) mutilated Cooper almost every night. Time to bring back Big Ed for the weekdays.

I predict he'll get until the end of the summer to turn the ratings around.

Probably. But this is still gonna blow up in MSNBC's face if he doesn't. Moving Ed Shultz to the weekends to make space for Hayes was a huge mistake. Hayes just does'n't have the prime time presence that Ed or Billow or Rachel has. He's a boring wonk who talks to other boring wonks in an hour-long wonkfest.

Cooper decimated Hayes last night.

Yeah, it was a busy news day with stuff with Cleveland and Jodi Airas, But Hayes pretty much is tanking. The trouble is that he's just not a prime-time guy. MSNBC is gonna regret dumping Ed Schultz on the weekdays for Hayes.

And Cooper is still beating Hayes.
At 8pm, Cooper’s 206K demo viewers and 604K total viewers outpaced Chris Hayes‘ 145K and 498K respectively. At 10pm, Cooper’s numbers were even higher, with 242K in the demo and 677K total. By contrast, Lawrence O’Donnell had 145K in the demo and 670K total viewers.

Sounds par for the course for a guy that sounds like he's never left his hermetically sealed bubble of liberalness since he was twelve.

I kind of wonder if MSNBC lets him on tonight for the tornado coverage out of Oklahoma, or decides to go with an actual news person instead. I noticed Al Sharpton wasn't on tonight, but Chris Mathews is.

Yeah, I don't think that's gonna be clicked on a lot.

MSNBC’s recently launched “All In with Chris Hayes” continues to see its ratings fall, Deadline Hollywood reports:

[...] [The] news network’s recently launched and struggling All In With Chris Hayes hit a new viewership loss of 396,000 and its second-lowest demo audience of just 88,000 on May 14.

Re: Chirs Hayes is a ratings disaster for MSNBC

Pretty long Mediate article on why Hayes is failing. He puts the blame on Hayes "consistent snubbing of what is driving the news cycle on any given day."

There are countless examples of this phenomenon, but let’s begin with the most recent. On May 22, Hayes spent two segments examining the damage Monday’s historic tornado did to the town of Moore, Oklahoma. He spent another segment outlining the details of an immigration reform bill which cleared its first hurdle after it was approved in committee. Hayes spent the final half of his show summarizing Apple CEO Tim Cook’s testimony before Congress and investigating whether Congressional Republicans would demand offsetting cuts in the budget to compensate for Oklahoma’s relief funding.

Notably missing from last night’s broadcast was the breaking news out of London. Just hours before Hayes program, two men savagely killed and dismembered a British serviceman and wounded two others in the middle of a London street in broad daylight. That story was made all the more chilling and tabloid by one assailant’s willingness to deliver a clear-eyed, anti-Western sermon into a nearby camera while still soaked in the blood of his victims.

While Hayes decided to pass on that story, Maddow did not. After noting the attackers’ stated Islamist motivation for the attack, Maddow sarcastically noted, “Nothing like getting a lecture on not wanting to be called an extremist on a man with a meat cleaver.”

This is indicative of a pattern. Hayes often touches begrudgingly, if at all, on the breaking news of the day while relying primarily on in-depth segments which shed light on the social injustice of the moment.

For example, on May 16, the day the White House released a 100-page interagency email exchange chronicling how the post-Benghazi talking points were formed, Hayes spent the majority of his program focusing on sexual assaults in the military and a supremely obscure story about a man imprisoned for disrupting a federal land auction to oil and gas companies.

Fixed.

Too bad MSNBC hasn't fixed their problem with Hayes' ratings by canning the show and putting Ed back on the weekdays.

good read :-D

MSNBC: 'All In' or 'All Over'?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/olivia-nuzzi/msnbc-ratings_b_3368215.html?utm_hp_ref=media

"It is not fair or accurate for the blame to be placed solely on the weakness of Chris Hayes' program, nor on the Obama scandals that viewers simply don't want to devote viewing time to. A series of things have to go wrong for a network to lose as much audience as MSNBC has. Roger Ailes, when his then-10pm host Paula Zahn was patted on the back by a reporter for growing Fox's ratings, noted "I could have put a dead raccoon on the air this year and got a better rating than last year." Alies was paying tribute to the concept of the lead-in, in his case O'Reilly at 8pm and Hannity at 9pm. The problem becomes what happens if you put a dead raccoon on not last, but at the start of primetime at 8pm? In that event, even a 9pm O'Reilly would be in trouble. In going from its founding liberal to his last guest host, Lawrence O'Donnell, to Ed Schultz, to the pleasant but exceedingly dry Chris Hayes, MSNBC has found a series of increasingly sick television raccoons."

Hayes has been a disaster. MSNBC was doing a great job with Ed as a lead-in. Now it can't even beat CNN regularly.

I guess it will take a month or two or relative quiet on the news front (i.e. no major disasters or incidents like Boston) to make MSNBC figure out what a total stupid move it made.
