That's right. The first one wasn't a regeneration. It was the original.

I didn't think it was crap but I was expecting a bit more. It was better than most of the episodes this season.

Hmmm, if Warren Ellis wrote an episode of Dr Who... yes, we do not want that.

I'd say it was.

Just last Saturday, in the Doctor's own mind - he only showed the standard 10 previous incarnations.

Then that kills what was reported about John Hurt.

According to the article, however, this is a "forgotten" Doctor, which would explain why he isn't referenced. However, they have been playing on the 'when the eleventh falls' prophecy, which would make little sense if the current Doctor isn't actually the 11th.

This was originally a fan proposal for the Shalka Doctor... played by Richard E Grant who has been a repeated villain this season.

Yet... he could also be a product of the Time War and there's been two Doctors since the 8th became the 9th. That was the theory with the Shalka Doctor, that the Time War caused history and the 9th Doctor to be rewritten. With this, it would be something different, either another Valyard type situation or perhaps a Time Lord scheme, given the forgotten part. Or Hurt is having a funny with the press.

My favorite for that. There is also the scene in the Next Doctor Christmas special where they first did that. Then with the Picasso episode, they sort of did it with a print out from the TARDIS console.

"The Fall of the Eleventh" does not have to refer to the Doctor at all. It could be a classic bit of Moff misdirection.

And as has been pointed out, if the Doctor has been forced to somehow forget a whole incarnation thanks to the Time War, that incarnation would be missing from all his memories and references.

If there is a missing Doctor (between the 8th and 9th?) then that would make Tennant's death the Fall of the Eleventh, right?

So, perhaps the place the Doctor is not supposed to go is Tennant's regeneration.

The main problem with that idea is that Tennant will reprise his role in the anniversary episode, not the season finale in which you would expect him to appear if the theory is true.

I think it's really this. Otherwise he's really dug into the mythos and is playing with it. After all, this could be a Valeyard type Doctor too. An interesting concept barely played with.

so they used a little loophole to explain the 11th/12th doctor conundrum. obviously john hurt was the one who wiped out the time lords and everyone else involved in the time war along with all the collateral damage in the process. that fits well with the theory that hurt fits between mcgann and ecclestone.

you reckon that they're going to give us another half-season of doctor hurt?

or maybe this will be how they get him out of the time locked history. in a story full of zygon's and the other two doctors i think this'll just end up being a larger set-up for the next season.

it'd be a massive waste if this entire season culminated into this introduction only to see it resolved so fast. especially wasting john hurt in a one-off anniversary special.
