Oh, ok then. I'm not reading any of the other GL titles, so that part was a bit confusing to me, I didn't know if Arkillo was betraying Sinestro or not in that scene. Any spoilers on who it was and what happened?

Not sure which Guardian it is. He's not referred to by name but he has short hair. After taunting him, Atrocitus puts his fist through the Guardians head.

I've learned two things from this issue...

1) Johns is going to be missed
2) Chappy's an idiot :P

And now I've just heard about the 10 pages of people lining up to stroke Geoff Johns.
I wonder which porn site will post the video first??

Come on, a run this long in this day and age is something to be acclaimed. It's basically only Johns, Bendis and Brubaker who have done it.

Or decried, given that his ideas during the run were:

"Let's severely overextend the Lantern idea and ruin its uniqueness by giving EVERY color of the rainbow AND black AND white their own Lanterns! 'Less is more'?? 'If everyone's special, no one is special'?? Never heard of any of that advice!"

"Let's see just how insular the GLs can get, by having them only deal with Lantern-based problems like the Manhunters, the Guardians, and ESPECIALLY the other Lantern Corps! Just let Evil Star and all the other non-Lantern GL adversaries run amok all over the universe! Why would the GLs care??"

"Hal and Sinestro! My BFF's Hal and Sinestro! Oh, and Baz! John Stewart?? Oh, he's 'Hal's partner'! He's meaningful, sure!" *whistles innocently as he pushes John under the rug with one foot, and proceeds to ignore him for 4 years straight*

Sorry, not impressed. Seems to me his 8 years ran about 4 years too long...

Except that is oversimplifying what Johns has actually done on the title during is run. I don't normally like nuRama's Top 10 lists but they did publish a pretty good list of some of the things that Geoff Johns accomplished while writing the title:

10 Things GEOFF JOHNS Added to the GREEN LANTERN Mythos

In particular one of my favorite additions was the fact that not anyone can put on a ring and use it. Yes, Geoff Johns made some questionable contributions to the GL mythology (I'm looking at you Alpha Lanterns) but as a whole, he really took the time to craft a bright, vibrant universe for the characters to exist in. Before Johns took over, the Green Lantern franchise was stale and was at the fringes of the DC Universe. Since Johns took over, the title and all subsequent titles have consistently been some of the best selling titles published by DC. Johns set out to make Green Lantern one of the most important characters in the DC Universe and now they are.

Yeesh.

Look, I had my problems with Johns' run, but no matter the content, you have to respect that he wrote the title for 8 years and made it a top-seller for the first time in a long time.

Thanks to Johns, Green Lantern is now probably the 3rd biggest character in DC, thanks to Johns they made a movie.

You may not like these things (and nobody likes the movie) but you have to respect them.

Yeah, that's what I said when I remembered each of those points so I could type them.

No, I really don't. It's called "overstaying his welcome". Sorry.

Thanks to Johns, Green Lantern is now probably the 3rd biggest character in DC

Only because his name was on the title. Fanboys will buy a phone book if they stamp "written by Geoff Johns" on it.

Just watch what happens now that he's gone...

thanks to Johns they made a movie.

Yeah, a crappy movie that flopped at the box office, which -- surprise, surprise -- was heavily influenced by its co-producer, Geoff Johns. The release of that one was sure a red-letter day...

You may not like these things (and nobody likes the movie) but you have to respect them.

No, I really don't. Sorry.

That's not saying much for DC, though.

Just to be clear, when Geoff Johns wrote Green Lantern Rebirth and the following Green Lantern series, he wasn't as big of a name in the industry as he is today. If anything, writing Green Lantern is what propelled him to the level he is now. Having wrote Green Lantern and having elevated the character and his mythology to the top tier of DC is what allowed him to become the type of writer that people will follow and buy no matter what he is writing.

Incorrect. Geoff built his rep on JSA -- the 1999 series, not the later "Justice Society of America" -- and Flash. That was back when he was "the Geoff Johns ESF (and Herald) remembered".

You mentioned earlier that your experience with Sinestro is under Johns. Did you only start reading DC comics in the last 10 years??

Geoff was still building towards who he is today at that time. He still wasn't a comics superstar at the time that he took the reigns of Green Lantern. His JSA and Flash runs sold well but nothing like what he accomplished with Green Lantern.

Huh? I did? :smt017

Are you talking about:

I don't mind it for Sinestro because it works for the way that Johns has written Green Lantern since Rebirth.

Because if so, I was just commenting that I didn't mind the "humanizing" of Sinestro because it's something that has been in the works for awhile as opposed to something that just came out of the blue.

And his Green Lantern wouldn't have sold as well as it did if it wasn't An Important Book You Must Read in Order to Follow the DC Universe. His Aquaman sure isn't topping the charts anymore; why?? Because there won't be any Blackest Night-style universe-wide crossovers coming out of it.

I maintain that he became a superstar on JSA and Flash. Without them, he wouldn't have been allowed to bring back his pal Hal.

Because if so, I was just commenting that I didn't mind the "humanizing" of Sinestro because it's something that has been in the works for awhile as opposed to something that just came out of the blue.

But that still doesn't make Hal and Sinestro "always friends".

The question remains: Did you only start reading DC comics in the last 10 years??
