Hmmm I think I'll recommend some recent anime that could or is coming up on Toonami.
Space Battleship Yamato 2199
Shakugan no Shana (all three series)
(Puella Magi Madoka Magica) Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
Nisemonogatari (Bakamonogatari sequel)
Nekomonogatari (Black) (Bakamonogatari prequel)
Sword Art Online
Suisei no Gargantia
Zetsuen no Tempest
Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita
Kore wa Zombie desu ka (both series)
Rinne no Lagrange
Bodacious Space Pirates
Tasogare Otome x Amnesia (Dusk Maiden of Amnesia)
Ano Natsu de Matteru
Lupin III - Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna
Shinryaku! Ika Musume
Valvrave the Liberator
Tiger & Bunny
It's a long list, but I have watched those series and they are all recent. I've split the list to give a kind of leveling for anyone interested. Those are a mix of comedy, adventure, sci-fi, horror and super-heroes. Bit hard to define each right off as they also tend to be mixed.
I have to say, some of these shows can be deceptive as they either start out slow and stale or playing a "catch" formula to gain an audience. Add to that that for some, the animation style can fool you. For example - Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita seemed a bit boring and the animation style was sort of subdued compared to others. But it was an amazingly well written series. Very cleaver and intelligent.
Not all these shows are high brow, but as with independent comics... some are really really great stories or characters or concepts being played with. Pretty hard to walk away and not be entertained.
If you have any question, please ask. OR just check out the openings and a scene or two on YouTube.
