Will Smith Won't Return for Independence Day Sequel

The actor is too big a name with too high a price tag to appear in the sequel to the popular action film.

Source: NY Daily News

Greetings, comrades! El Presidente here, reporting from Edward Snowden's room at the Santa Isabel Hotel, where we're discussing using overreaching United States government surveillance programs to get scoops on the latest movie industry rumors.

While I contnue to work on that, I've got some hot Hollywood gossip for you today, my friends! The industry has been rumbling for some time now about an Independence Day sequel, and that news was confirmed by director Roland Emmerich in an interview with the New York Daily News this weekend. Unexpectedly, Emmerich, or as his friends call him, E-Rich, dropped a major scoop bomb in the interview. It seems that Independence Day star Will Smith, or Billy S as his friends call him, is considered too expensive and well-known for the project, so he won't be returning. According to E-Rich, the sequel will have "like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film (in the script) and the other half people who are new."

This really is a shocker, comrades, almost as bad as the time my sister Juanita was revealed to be CIA agent Richard Johnston in a wig and a dress! Billy S was the heart and soul of Independence Day, and I'm not sure how much drawing power the movie will have without him. Well, that is unless the studio hires a suitable replacement. Is Joseph Gordon-Levitt , or G-Lizzy as his friends call him, doing anything?

I apologize for being the bearer of bad news, my loyal readers. If there's one thing I know about aliens, it's that they, like Hollywood gossip bloggers, love to keep score. The planet Earth was leading 1-0 after Smith blew up their mothership with a super cool computer virus in Independence Day, but when they come looking for payback, the star power of Judd Hirsch may not be enough to prevent them from evening the odds. Stay tuned to CubanoReview.com and The Outhouse for updates.

Well, he considers himself to be too big to not be the sole hero of any movie. But Ross Bagley who was the little boy in the movie is all grown up now. He can fill in the "hero" role.

Um ...does Will Smith really still have the star power that media sites claim? Did MIB3 make gangbusters money or just do okay?

No, it didn't go great. WS is over. Hollywood's moved on with its flavor of the day. Which seems to be Channing Tatum. At least Smith's movies made money back in the day, based on his being in them.

How is his latest doing? That'll give a good idea how a rehashed 90s flick he was in would do now with him again.

I liked ID4 but I thought it ended pretty well. No need to go back to the well.

I remember rewatching it a couple of years ago and it really hadn't aged well.

I dunno, I think there's definite potential for a sequel's story.

Millions and millions of the aliens, their ENTIRE race, was on those ships. Even assuming the crashes killed 90% of them, that's still a STAGGERINGLY high number of hostile alien invaders, possing advanced knowledge and tech, who now have nowhere else to go; they HAVE to fight to the last, because there's no possible retreat.

The entire planet just became a global quagmire. Vietnam To The Stars, as it were.

I agree. I mean, the aliens worked us over pretty well last time around. They destroyed most of the major cities around the world and then left the wreckage of their ships all over the place. What is a sequel going to do? Have the rest of the aliens come to Earth looking for revenge?
