Two steps forward, one step back.
Most gamers may be used to getting a basic headset with their console purchase. Aside from the base model 4GB 360, the majority of 360's came with one. The Playstation 4 comes with a mono earbud/microphone. The XBox One however, will not include one, instead offering the Kinect to take it's place.
Xbox One does not include a pack-in headset accessory. Each Xbox One includes the new Kinect sensor, with a highly sensitive multi-array microphones designed to enable voice inputs and chat as a system-level capability, both in-game and with Skype and other experiences. For gamers who prefer a headset, we have a variety of offerings that you can find on the Xbox Wire.
Granted, I'm sure that many a gamer would take an XBox One that's $100 cheaper, sans Kinect with a basic headset, but that choice is not yours to make.
The Kinect will allow you to chat with friends, but anyone who has played a multi-player game, especially a shooter, knows how ridiculous it is to have a dozen voices shouting out of your TV in addition to the game sound.
Existing headsets will not work with the XBox One due to changes in the connector. Turtle Beach however, whose headsets will not be compatible with the XBox One as they exist now, will be selling an adapter. For players that have spent hundreds of dollars on quality gaming headsets, this is good news.
Perhaps Microsoft will still reconsider some of its policies, as they have with the DRM like features on XBox One. We are still months away from release and though the changes they've made have won over a few players, many are still looking at the PS4, despite being XBox players for years.
