Funeral was today - typical Catholic service.

Had a luncheon afterwards where I emcee'd a testimonial - many people offered up bits and I ended it with my speech (which I'll paraphrase to save time)...

I am so much like my Dad in so many ways. But one way I am very different is that I'm a geek. Comic books, video games, Monty Python etc.

Anyway - not long ago after my Dad's tumor was removed, the Doctor's proclaimed him 'Miracle Man' because of his recovery (short-lived as it was). Well, I'm here to say - they were wrong. That's not the right name.

Anyway - let's go back in time to when I was 9 years old. I'm at the Mall with my dad when I hear this woman shriek that her purse had just been stolen. My Dad gave chase, through the mall, through the exiting doors and into the parking lot. The kid got a way but I saw something in my Dad I never saw before.

A few years later I starting reading comic books and when I got around to one of my first Superman stories, it had Supes (easily) catching a purse snatcher. The symmetry to my Dad was inescapable (not that ever would have admitted that back then). Since then Superman has caught many a purse thief in movies, cartoons and on the printed page and I've often recalled that symmetry each time.

But it goes much more than that, because My father was born on April 12, 1938... the very week that Action Comics #1 (Superman's first appearance) went on sale. [I held up a copy (reprint) of Action #1]

That and so much more doesn't make him 'Miracle Man". He's my Dad. He's my Superman.

And not that I need a reason to think about him in the future, but it's going to be nice knowing that I'll have an automatic excuse to think on him a couple times a month when each new issue comes out.

It sounds like a good speech.

How are you doing anyway? I hope you're OK.
