What the Iron Throne Really Looks Like According to George Martin

We've all seen the throne everyone fights to sit in on HBO's Game of Thrones, but what does Martin think of it?

George R.R. Martin, he's the guy who actually writes the A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels for those of you coming straight from watching the show, believes they've never got the Iron Throne quite right on the hit TV Show.

He recently posted an image from artist Marc Simonetti from the upcoming The World of Ice and Fire book to show what he thinks is the closest anyone has come to truly showing what the Iron Throne looks like:

“It’s a rough, not a final version, so what you see in the book will be more polished. But Marc has come closer here to capturing the Iron Throne as I picture it than any other artist to tackle it. From now on, THIS will be the reference I give to every other artist tackling a throne room scene. This Iron Throne is massive. Ugly. Assymetric. It’s a throne made by blacksmiths hammering together half-melted, broken, twisted swords, wrenched from the hands of dead men or yielded up by defeated foes... a symbol of conquest...”

Definitely an imposing throne and one that would have been awe inspiring to see on the show.  Although I guess not as easy to lug around for fans all over the globe.  It's very similar to Marc's prior painting of the Throne Room:

You can see more of Marc Simonetti's work at his deviantart page.

Yeah but that's porcelain (and mine is steel but the iron ones I found were pretty gross)

He did, but by the time he finished writing the memo, they were halfway into season 2.

If/when (damn well better be when) Daenerys reclaims the Iron Throne, I hope she has Drogon melt it down and replaces it with her simple ebony bench & cushions.

(Oh, D... how I love you so. Please feed Sansa to one of your dragons, too.)

They're on a budget, yo. Especially in the first two seasons. Watch the b-t-s featurette about the Battle of Blackwater. They had to make a lot of changes to save money, such as having the battle occur at night, filming at the same backdrop from different angles, using the same ship over and over for CGI, etc. It's stuff that probably happens all the time, but clearly they were scrimping & saving to be able to have a battle of that scale.

Yup. A previous king (Aerys) would cut himself on it on a regular basis.

Aerys was not really the smartest king of the bunch. Personally I like the TV version better than was is presented here. I just think with the other throne there would be too much yelling 'what did you say?'
