Can't tell if trolling or being a smartass but Gage's Avengers Academy was the best Avengers book being put out during it's whole tenure. It gained a cult fanbase and lasted 39 issues.

When it's all revealed to be clones/robots then I will think about actually reading this book. Never been a fan of just killing off characters for entertainment or shock value. It's boring and overdone.

When I think of Niko and Mettle I don't think of them as being popular characters. I read Runaways and Avengers Academy and thought they were both great comic books. Sure, you can say they both had a cult fanbase, but cult doesn't equal popular. They are two characters that come from cancelled team books. I don't even know if the average comic fan could even tell me who they are.

Mettle is a popular meme at least.

Dude, I like you...you're good people.

But did you really just say that Cult doesn't equal popular? You know how much of an oxymoron that whole sentence is?

From a trade/collection standpoint both Runaways and Academy do extremely well for Marvel. (surprisingly a lot of Gage's collected work sells incredibly well in collected format.)

I'm pretty sure if you asked the average comic book fan, we're talking the most casual reader in the world here who Nico was they'd know who you were talking about.

Runaways is definitely one of those "gateway drug" comics.

A cult following is a small but passionate group of fans. That doesn't mean popular to me, sorry. Well, I guess it's popular with a few people.

You really think the casual fans know who Nico is? Maybe your right.

I think you are underestimating how many people have actually read Runaways, its in almost every public library i've been to across the country... It sold a lot more in trade then it did in single issue form, which is why Marvel let it run as long as it did, and did everything they could to justify the comic being published, tried to tie the characters into the events to bring more attention to the group. There's a reason that even after the series has been cancelled the characters still show up, and weren't relegated to limbo.

I could be mistaken. It's known to happen from time to time.

Huh.

For some reason, I didn't see it as robot bodies of former Murder World contestants (although that fits in with Arcade's M.O, right?) but a workshop like the one Death Locket was rebuilt in. I thought it was implying a connection between Arcade and D.L.

So I'm glad I reread it...

I think that's probably it. The killing of Mettle was staged just to sell the illusion that he had godlike powers and give them a reason to follow his rules. Then they'll find out in the end that they could have overpowered him and escaped at any time and feel stupid.

But they ALL fought Arcade, not just Mettle...

what does that matter? you're not really buying that he actually has Sentry powers suddenly are you? that was an obvious trick of some kind from day one. "killing" one of them just helps sell the illusion. that's...kind of his whole thing.
