I'm beginning to notice a severe lack of diversity in the designs a lot of these places offer.

I feel like 50% of the shirts they put out are Dr. Who related.

I've only recently started watching Dr. Who, and it's pretty good, but it seems like everyone talks about it now and references to the TARDIS show up all over the place. I was reading an article interviewing local 'influential' people (sumbitches didn't ask me) and the president of the local college mentioned Dr. Who was his favorite TV show.

What's happened in the past year or two to push Dr. Who into the American cultural limelight?

Maybe it's just been a slow gradual build since it re-started (what, six - seven years now?).
Like you said, you only just started watching, so that's at least one more person than the week before.

True. I don't know if it's because I've spent more time at Bleeding Cool, but I've seen a lot more Dr. Who references in the past year or so than I can recall in the previous decade (or more, yikes) of online geekery.

LOL
Not quite a decade for me, yet.
At least forum wise. I started posting Newsarama in 2004, but had been following the site for a few years before that.

I think I was 2000 or 2001. I hung out at the DC Message Boards before moving to Newsarama during its comicon days.

whup...
I take that back.
I was on the Avengers Mailing list and occasionally posted in the rec.arts.comics newsgroups starting during Heroes Reborn, anxiously awaiting it's end. Kurt Busiek would even chime in once in a while.
So that would make it 17 years of online geekery!

Imaginative. I'm also pretty tired of the endless parade of cereal box style designs.

I think a lot of the designs would make better posters than t-shirts too.

Ript Apparel offers posters for $20.
Today's is an Iron Maiden, Game Of Thrones mash up.

I like today's Teefury shirt (Bartman done in the style of Batman: TAS) but I can't seem to share the photo with the right colors in in...

Its only a problem when you have more than seven. If you can create a shirt them for a week straight you are OK, anything over, you have a problem.
