That's what the big 50th anniversary special is going to be about. Explaining it all.

For some reason, that's a bone of contention among Who fans. Some swear up and down and although the credit clearly read "Introducing John Hurt as The Doctor", Hurt's character cannot possibly be a true Doctor and must be some sort of anomaly.

Suffice it to say, no one posting this stuff knows the true status of Hurt's character or what legacy he'll leave. It's all guesswork and supposition.

The rest of us will wait and see.

How is it he can't possibly be a true Doctor?

If I understand correctly, at midnight on BBCs UK and American, they are showing a special to announce the actor who will follow Matt Smith.

EDIT: I think that might be like 2PM here.

I checked the BBC America website after this question and it said to turn in at 2pm today. FYI. I texted the wife to have her watch, I will be at work and I don't think she is capable of programming the dvr.

Edit: Clearly posted before the edit.

Cool. Set it to record. Hopefully she watches it or the Torchwood marathon I am recording or reads or watches netflilx or something, instead of watching something else at that point.

Yeah it's always been set for 7pm in England - and I was shocked to see BBCA airing it simultaneously at our 2pm.

It looks like the 50th Anniversary special will do the same (airing at 2pm here and 11am on the west coast).

We'll see with the Zoe Bell show today if BBCA tosses in commercials but I hope they air it ad free so that 50th can do the same.

Odd thing is the BBC America showing is 30 minutes which I thought the BBC One was going to be for an hour. Oh well. I have it DVR'd.

Also I think this is pretty exciting but also wonder if any scripted show in the States ever did something like this. Where a new cast member got such a big hello to everyone. Note: Sports and Reality TV would not count.

The only American show I can think of that has developed programming around it is The Walking Dead and there would certainly be something said on Talking Dead after the fact.

Saturday morning programs on the networks, both animated and live action, used to have specials every year before the new season started introducing the new line ups of shows, very similar to this. Networks gave out very little info in those pre-internet days, and so kids and some adults too would be glued to their TV sets to see what new programs were coming up.
