Collider Changes Name to FBP: Federal Bureau of Physics, or FBPFBP For Short

The creators cited "it was too catchy" and "people who liked the first issue might buy the second" as reasons to change the name before the second issue hits stores.

MTV Geek announced today that the hot new Vertigo series, Collider, would be changing names after only one issue. The new name for the series is Federal Bureau of Physics, or FBP, though neither the full name nor the abbreviation is particularly attractive, so screw it, they're gonna use both. The full title will be FPB: Federal Bureau of Physics. Yup. The comes as a result of a copyright dispute over the name "Collider."

"When we came up with the name Collider, we thought, this is a catchy name that people can remember. It's short, it's to the point, it really grabs people, you know?" said writer Simon Oliver in an exclusive interview at MTV Geek. Unfortunately, since the interview is exclusive, we can't publish Oliver's actual words and so we're just making up stuff we think he might have said. Good enough, right? "It took a lot of work to come up with the perfect name. A lot of hard, grueling work."

"Well, I'm not going through all that again," added Oliver. "Just so someone else can claim copyright on it? I'm gonna come up with the most unwieldy, awful name ever."

"A name like Collider only comes along once in a lifetime," Oliver continued. "I mean, look at the stuff Robert Plant did after Led Zeppelin. Band of Joy? Strange Sensation? The Sensational Space Shifters?"

Oliver shook his head sadly. "Just like Robert Plant, I know that you only get one great shot at the perfect name," he explained. "We had ours, and we blew it."

And that's how the next issue came to be called FBP: Federal Bureau of Physics #2. Doesn't it just roll off the tongue? Like a raspberry. Fppbpbpbpbpbpbpbpb.

They were sued by CERN, who has trademarked the title "Collider."

CERN has already filed a lawsuit over the new name, because they also have a tradmark over anything involving abbreviations and physics.

Do you think this is worthy of a counter reset? Blue is off today and he's my moral compass.

DC owns Vertigo, vertigo did something stupid... we should also possibly make a new counter for CERN.

They should have checked the copyright status. Counter reset.

I think yes that's pretty stupid. Even I wondered if the name was going to bite them in the ass when I heard it, and they should have checked long ago. Also, the new name is a dumb choice--possibly for more than one reason, if MrBlack is correct.

I have to agree about the title not being a very good one for this series. When I saw the first issue solicited, I wondered what exactly the title had to do with the series. After having read the first issue, I'm still wondering what the title has to do with the series. :smt102

I'm just making up silly things. I can't imagine CERN being that litigious over the Large Hadron Collider.

Didn't Chris Roberson have to rename a book for Oni recently too? I think it was originally called "The Strangers" and he had to change it to "The Mysterious Strangers"...something like that.

my guess Didio read the book, then went into the vertigo offices scratching his head screaming "no shit collided in this fucking book change its name to Federal Bureau of Physics or it is cancelled and that shitty Sandman book by the Gaiman hack goes with it!"

Hence, name change.

They didn't check the copyright. :|

The have an entire armada of intellectual property lawyers because their IPs are their greatest assets and they defend them like a rabid mama badger backed into a corner protecting her last cub who also has cancer. Nothing goes in or out of their offices without miles of legal protection. The idea that they would pull such an incredibly amateurish blunder is simply beyond reason.

There aren't enough :smt011
